Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Customer Engagement Manager position within AWS's Worldwide Public Sector team. With over 10 years of experience in strategic customer engagement and public sector sales, I have a proven track record of accelerating revenue and building scalable go-to-market solutions for education and government clients. My ability to work backwards from customer missions and orchestrate cross-functional resources aligns perfectly with this role's requirements.

In my previous role at [Company], I led complex initiatives that drove a 30% increase in deal velocity and deepened strategic influence with key state-level stakeholders. I am confident I can bring similar impact to AWS by translating leadership priorities into execution and developing repeatable frameworks that improve close rates.

I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to AWS's mission of empowering public sector organizations through cloud innovation. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Can you describe a time when you had to remove significant blockers to close a complex deal with a government or education customer?
In my previous role, I worked with a state education department that was hesitant about cloud adoption due to data privacy concerns. I collaborated with our security and compliance teams to develop a custom solution that met their regulatory requirements, and I facilitated executive-level meetings to build trust. This resulted in a multi-year contract worth $5M.
How do you approach building executive-level relationships with public sector stakeholders?
I start by understanding their mission and priorities, then align AWS capabilities to their goals. I schedule regular strategic reviews, provide relevant thought leadership content, and ensure I always deliver value in every interaction. Building trust through consistency and expertise is key.
Describe a time you developed a repeatable framework that improved sales outcomes. What was the impact?
I created a 'Statewide Cloud Adoption Playbook' that mapped common blockers and solutions across multiple state agencies. This reduced deal cycle time by 20% and increased win rates by 15% because account teams could proactively address concerns.
How do you stay informed about competitive dynamics in the public sector cloud market?
I regularly attend industry conferences, participate in customer advisory boards, and monitor analyst reports. I also maintain a network of peers in other cloud providers and public sector IT leaders to exchange insights.
Can you give an example of how you translated a senior leader's strategic vision into an actionable plan for account teams?
Our VP wanted to increase AWS adoption in K-12 schools. I broke this down into specific initiatives: creating tailored marketing materials, training account teams on education funding cycles, and establishing partnerships with educational technology vendors. I then assigned owners and tracked progress with quarterly reviews.

We are seeking a Customer Engagement Manager (CEM) to join our Worldwide Public Sector Sales team, supporting Education and State & Local Government customers. In this role, you will serve as a strategy and customer engagement leader, acting as an extension of senior executive leadership, partnering directly with account teams to accelerate revenue, remove blockers, and build scalable go-to-market solutions that drive AWS adoption across SLG and EDU. This is a strategy and customer engagement position that requires you to deeply understand customer missions, work backwards from their needs, and orchestrate the full breadth of AWS resources, translating leadership priorities into execution, leading complex initiatives with significant bottom-line impact, and orchestrating high-impact customer engagements that deepen AWS’s strategic influence and accelerate deal velocity. You will leverage voice-of-customer insights and competitive intelligence to develop repeatable frameworks that improve close rates, navigate competitive situations, and position AWS as the preferred cloud partner at scale.
Key job responsibilities
• Partner with account teams and senior leadership to identify blockers, accelerate deals, and translate strategic priorities into execution. Lead complex, high-impact initiatives that drive SLG/EDU revenue growth, aligning cross-functional teams, influencing external partnerships and customers, and building scalable solutions that proactively address go-to-market gaps. Operate as an extension of senior leadership to make tradeoffs, mitigate risk, and drive innovation at broad organizational scale.
• Strategic Customer Engagement: Build and maintain executive-level relationships with key customer stakeholders and own the associated preparation for customer meetings on behalf of your senior leadership.
• Mission-Driven Planning: Work backwards from customer mission objectives to develop comprehensive engagement strategies that align AWS capabilities with institutional and state-wide priorities.
• Account Strategy & Growth: Partner with account teams to support deal acceleration, competitive positioning, helping remove blockers, that drive adoption, expansion, and long-term strategic value. Develop repeatable strategies (gathered from customer or org-wide patterns) that drive predictable revenue outcomes, reduce deal-by-deal customization, and ensure AWS is positioned to win.
• Executive Communication: Prepare and deliver executive briefings, business reviews, and strategic recommendations to both internal and external senior leadership.
• Thought Leadership: Drive strategic customer engagement by representing the SLG/EDU organization at industry events, customer forums, executive roundtables, and advisory councils, using these platforms to deepen relationships, validate AWS’s value proposition, and shape sector-specific points of view that articulate why AWS is the preferred cloud partner for public sector and education missions. Contribute to the development of messaging, best practices, and market positioning that equip field teams and customers with a compelling “Why AWS” narrative grounded in real-world outcomes.
