Key Skills

Palo Alto Firewalls Cisco Switching Meraki BGP OSPF MPLS VPN (IPsec/SSL) Network Automation (Python/Bash) Data Center Operations Network Troubleshooting

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Software Engineer II - Network Operations position at Marqeta. With over 4 years of hands-on experience in enterprise network infrastructure, including deploying and managing Palo Alto firewalls, Cisco switches, and Meraki solutions, I am confident in my ability to contribute to your team.

In my previous role, I successfully led projects to optimize BGP and OSPF routing, resulting in a 20% improvement in network performance. I also have extensive experience with VPN technologies and data center operations, including rack and stack and cable management.

I am particularly drawn to Marqeta's Flex First culture and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge payment network infrastructure. My strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently align perfectly with the requirements of this role.

I look forward to the possibility of discussing how my technical expertise and collaborative approach can support Marqeta's goals. Thank you for considering my application.

Can you describe a time when you had to troubleshoot a complex network issue involving multiple layers of the OSI model?
I once faced a persistent connectivity issue between two data centers. I systematically checked Layer 1 (cabling), Layer 2 (VLANs, spanning tree), and Layer 3 (routing tables). Eventually, I discovered a misconfiguration in BGP that was causing asymmetric routing, which I corrected by adjusting route advertisements.
How would you configure a site-to-site VPN between two offices using Palo Alto firewalls?
I would first define the IKE gateway with pre-shared key, specifying the peer IP and authentication. Then create the IPsec tunnel, setting encryption and authentication algorithms. Finally, add a tunnel interface and configure static routes or BGP to direct traffic through the VPN. I'd also ensure security policies allow the traffic.
Explain the difference between OSPF and BGP and when you would use each.
OSPF is an interior gateway protocol (IGP) used within an autonomous system for fast convergence and loop-free routing, ideal for data center networks. BGP is an exterior gateway protocol (EGP) used between autonomous systems, suitable for connecting to ISPs or partners. I'd use OSPF inside our network and BGP for external connectivity.
How do you ensure network security when deploying firewalls in a colocation environment?
I follow best practices: change default passwords, disable unnecessary services, implement least-privilege access rules, use threat prevention features, and regularly update firmware. I also segment traffic using VLANs and enforce strict egress filtering. Additionally, I log and monitor firewall activity for anomalies.
Describe your experience with network automation. Can you provide an example of a script you wrote?
I have used Python with Netmiko to automate VLAN configuration across multiple switches. For example, I wrote a script that reads a CSV file with switch hostnames and VLAN IDs, then logs into each switch and applies the configuration. This reduced manual errors and saved hours during a network refresh.
