Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Engineering Manager, Safety position at Reddit. With a proven track record of leading large engineering teams and building scalable systems, I am confident in my ability to drive Reddit's safety strategy. My experience in full-stack engineering and AI/ML systems aligns perfectly with the requirements of this role.

I have successfully managed teams of 10+ engineers, delivering high-impact projects in fast-paced environments. I thrive on autonomy and am passionate about leveraging AI to enhance platform safety. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to Reddit's mission of fostering a welcoming community.

Thank you for considering my application. I am eager to discuss how my skills and experience can benefit Reddit.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe your experience managing a team of 10+ engineers. How did you ensure high performance and delivery?
I led a team of 12 engineers at a previous company, focusing on clear goal setting, regular one-on-ones, and fostering a culture of ownership. I implemented agile processes and used OKRs to align the team with business priorities, resulting in a 30% increase in delivery speed.
How would you approach building a scalable safety platform that can handle a 10x surge in activity?
I would start by assessing current architecture and identifying bottlenecks. Then, I'd prioritize modular design, microservices, and cloud-native solutions for elasticity. I'd also implement automated testing and monitoring to ensure reliability under load.
Can you give an example of how you have used AI/ML to solve a safety-related problem?
At my last role, I led a project to deploy a machine learning model for detecting spam in real-time. We used a combination of NLP and behavioral analysis, reducing false positives by 40% and improving detection speed by 5x.
How do you balance the need for speed in incident response with the need for accuracy?
I advocate for a tiered response system: automated actions for clear-cut cases, and human review for ambiguous ones. I also invest in robust logging and dashboards to quickly identify and escalate issues without sacrificing accuracy.
Describe a time you had to influence cross-functional teams to align on a technical strategy. How did you handle conflicting priorities?
I facilitated a workshop with product, data science, and operations to map out dependencies and trade-offs. By presenting data-driven scenarios and focusing on shared goals, we reached consensus on a phased approach that addressed everyone's key concerns.
