Key Skills

AWS Kubernetes Terraform CI/CD DevOps SRE Platform Engineering Observability Leadership Infrastructure as Code

Dear Hiring Team,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Principal DevOps Engineer position at Turnitin. With over a decade of experience in infrastructure and platform engineering, I have led scalable solutions on AWS and Kubernetes, driving reliability and developer productivity. My technical leadership has improved deployment safety and reduced operational toil across global teams.

I am particularly drawn to Turnitin's mission of upholding academic integrity and the opportunity to shape the platform strategy in a remote-first environment. I have mentored senior engineers and established engineering standards that align with business goals.

I would welcome the chance to discuss how my background in platform modernization and SRE practices can contribute to Turnitin's continued innovation. Thank you for your consideration.

Describe a time you led a major platform initiative that improved reliability at scale.
At my previous company, I led the migration of a monolithic CI/CD pipeline to a containerized system using EKS and Terraform. This reduced deployment failures by 40% and cut release time from hours to minutes.
How do you approach mentoring senior engineers while remaining hands-on?
I balance hands-on coding with design reviews and pair programming. For example, I mentored a senior engineer on implementing SLOs by co-authoring monitoring dashboards and guiding them through incident analysis.
What strategies do you use to reduce operational toil in a DevOps organization?
I prioritize automating repetitive tasks, such as using Lambda for auto-remediation and building golden paths for common deployments. In one case, I reduced toil by 30% by standardizing alerting and runbooks.
How do you handle disagreements with architects or other tech leads on platform direction?
I advocate for data-driven decisions, presenting trade-offs and cost/benefit analyses. For example, I once proposed a serverless-first approach over Kubernetes for certain workloads, leading to a hybrid design that optimized cost and performance.
Can you explain how you would improve DORA metrics in a team?
I would start by measuring current DORA metrics, then identify bottlenecks in deployment frequency and lead time. I'd implement feature flags, improve CI/CD pipelines, and ensure observability to reduce change failure rate and restore time.
