Key Skills

User Experience Design User Research Data Platforms AEC BIM Prototyping Design Thinking Cross-functional Collaboration Product Strategy Interaction Design

Dear Hiring Team,

I am excited to apply for the Senior User Experience Designer position on the AEC Data Model team at Autodesk. With over 6 years of experience designing complex B2B platform products, I have a strong track record of creating intuitive, data-driven experiences. My portfolio includes work on BIM and 3D applications, where I partnered with product managers and engineers to deliver user-centered solutions that handle granular project data.

I am particularly drawn to this role because of its focus on shaping the future of AEC data access and management. My experience facilitating design thinking workshops and prototyping at multiple fidelities aligns well with the collaborative and ambiguous nature of this work. I am confident I can help drive the experience strategy for Autodesk's platform ecosystem.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how my skills can contribute to the team.

Sincerely, [Your Name]

Can you describe a complex data platform you designed for and how you approached the user experience?
I led the redesign of a data management dashboard for a construction SaaS platform. The challenge was handling thousands of building elements with version history. I conducted user research with project managers and engineers to understand their workflows, then created modular dashboards with customizable views. We used iterative prototyping and usability testing to refine the interaction patterns, resulting in a 30% reduction in time to find specific data.
How do you balance user needs with technical constraints in platform design?
I collaborate closely with engineering from the start. For example, when designing API documentation for a data platform, I worked with engineers to understand the underlying data structures and then designed an experience that abstracted complexity for developers. I advocate for user needs by presenting data from user research and proposing compromises that maintain usability without overcomplicating the implementation.
Describe a time you facilitated a design thinking workshop. What was the outcome?
I facilitated a workshop with product, engineering, and marketing to envision a new feature for managing BIM data. We used journey mapping and brainstorming to align on user pain points. The outcome was a prioritized set of concepts that we validated with users. This workshop helped break down silos and created a shared vision that accelerated the design process.
How do you stay updated with emerging technologies like AI and how do they influence your design?
I follow industry blogs, attend conferences, and experiment with new tools. When AI features like smart search emerged, I designed a proof-of-concept for auto-tagging building elements. I focused on transparency and control, ensuring users understood how AI suggested tags and could override them. This approach built trust and improved efficiency.
Can you give an example of how you used user research to inform a design decision?
While designing a 3D model viewer for an AEC platform, user research showed that many users struggled with navigation. We observed that they preferred to see a 2D floor plan alongside the 3D view. We implemented a synchronized split-view, allowing users to interact with both representations simultaneously. Usability testing confirmed a 40% improvement in task completion time.

Position Overview

At Autodesk, our Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Data Model team is focused on shaping the future of how customers access, manage, and unlock value from their data across the project and asset lifecycle. We design the APIs, services, and user interfaces that power Autodesk’s data platform ecosystem and enable critical AEC workflows.

As a Senior Experience Designer – AEC Platform Data, you will collaborate closely with Product Management, Engineering, User Research, and Design partners to drive the experience strategy for complex, data-driven platform products. You will help shape how customers and developers interact with granular project and asset data, enabling powerful new insights and more connected workflows across Autodesk’s ecosystem.

We are looking for a designer who is a strong human-centered design advocate, a creative problem‑solver, and a high‑impact facilitator. This designer must be someone who is passionate about crafting world‑class platform experiences in technically complex and ambiguous problem spaces.

This role can be based predominantly from home, with occasional opportunities to get together with the wider team in UK.

  • Partner with product managers, engineers, user researchers, and designers to define and deliver great experiences from initial concept through successful implementation
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure design work remains aligned with adjacent products and platform initiatives
  • Visualize and prototype solutions at multiple levels of fidelity, from high‑level wireframes to testable, interactive high‑fidelity prototypes
  • Rapidly develop and validate experience concepts through internal reviews and direct user feedback
  • Facilitate and participate in design thinking workshops, brainstorming sessions, and cross‑functional working sessions
  • Apply and contribute to design system standards to ensure consistency and cohesion across platform experiences
  • Lead design presentations and discussions with a broad range of stakeholders and audiences
  • Maintain close contact with users through interviews, field research, and user events, translating insights into new and improved experiences
  • Research user interface trends and emerging technologies, assessing their potential impact on data‑centric user experiences

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience in user experience design and user research
  • Demonstrated experience designing complex B2B or technical platform products
  • Strong understanding of AEC customer workflows and experience designing BIM and 3D applications
  • Experience with complex data management concepts and related experience design patterns
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
  • A current portfolio demonstrating enterprise UX case studies
  • Strong facilitation skills and comfort working in complex, ambiguous technical environments
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to distill complex ideas and reframe challenges clearly and optimistically

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing or working with AI‑supported tools and workflows, and familiarity with emerging AI concepts such as Agents and MCPs
  • First‑hand experience across the AEC project lifecycle and with Autodesk tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, and Forma
  • Experience auditing, integrating, or optimizing existing user experiences
  • Working knowledge of platform concepts such as SDKs and APIs

The Ideal Candidate

  • Passionate about designing tools that help people solve meaningful, real‑world problems
  • Comfortable navigating complexity and ambiguity with curiosity and empathy
  • Collaborative, optimistic, and proactive in building shared understanding across teams
  • A systems thinker who enjoys connecting experiences across products and platforms
  • Takes ownership and leads design work with minimal oversight
  • Advocates strongly for user needs while balancing technical and business considerations
  • Actively seeks feedback and helps raise the quality of design across the team
