Key Skills

PostgreSQL Snowflake ETL Query Performance Tuning AWS RDS/Aurora dbt Airflow Git SQL Profiling Data Migration

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my interest in the Senior Database Administrator position. With over 6 years of experience managing PostgreSQL and Snowflake environments, I have a proven track record of optimizing query performance and building robust ETL pipelines using tools like dbt and Airflow.

In my previous role, I reduced query latency by 40% through index optimization and execution plan analysis. I also led data migration from RDS to Snowflake, ensuring seamless integration and cost savings.

I am excited about the opportunity to bring my expertise in high-volume data systems to your team and contribute to delivering personalized customer experiences at scale. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

How would you approach tuning a slow-running SQL query in a production PostgreSQL database?
First, I would use EXPLAIN ANALYZE to get the execution plan and identify bottlenecks like sequential scans or missing indexes. Then, I'd consider rewriting the query, adding indexes, or adjusting database configurations (e.g., work_mem). I'd also check for locking issues and ensure statistics are up-to-date.
Describe your experience with building ETL pipelines using dbt and Airflow. Can you give an example?
I have used dbt for data transformation and Airflow for orchestration. For example, I created a pipeline that extracted data from multiple PostgreSQL instances, ran dbt models to clean and aggregate it, and loaded it into Snowflake. I set up Airflow DAGs with sensors for data arrival and SLA monitoring.
What strategies do you use to ensure high availability and disaster recovery for production databases?
I implement automated backups with point-in-time recovery, use read replicas for failover, and test recovery procedures regularly. For AWS RDS, I enable Multi-AZ deployments. I also set up monitoring alerts for replication lag and storage metrics.
How do you collaborate with software engineers to prevent performance issues before code deployment?
I participate in code reviews to examine SQL queries and database schema changes. I provide feedback on index usage, query patterns, and potential N+1 problems. I also encourage using query analysis tools in staging environments to catch issues early.
Explain a challenging database performance issue you resolved and the steps you took.
Once, a customer-facing application experienced timeouts due to a heavy query that scanned millions of rows. I used pg_stat_activity to identify the query, ran EXPLAIN to see a sequential scan, and added a composite index on the filtered columns. I also rewrote the query to use a JOIN instead of a subquery, cutting execution time from 30 seconds to 200ms.
