Adjoint Professor Palliative Care Health Disparities Community Engaged Research Mentorship Curriculum Development Research Methodology Health Equity SWOG ASCENT Consortium

Dear Hiring Committee,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Adjoint Professor position with the ASCENT Consortium. With a terminal degree and extensive experience leading palliative care research, I am eager to contribute to the Consortium's mission of advancing high-quality research for individuals with serious illness. My background includes serving as Principal Investigator on federally funded grants and publishing widely in health disparities and community-engaged research.

In my previous roles, I have mentored emerging researchers and developed curricula to promote health equity. I am particularly drawn to the opportunity to integrate inclusive methodologies across Consortium activities and to co-chair SWOG's Palliative Care Committee. My expertise aligns well with the responsibilities outlined, and I am confident in my ability to foster collaboration and innovation within the Engagement Core.

I look forward to the possibility of discussing how my skills can support ASCENT's goals. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe your experience leading federally funded palliative care research projects.
I have served as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded grants focusing on palliative care for underserved populations. This includes designing mixed-methods studies, managing interdisciplinary teams, and ensuring community engagement. My work has resulted in over 20 peer-reviewed publications and several policy briefs.
How would you integrate health equity into the activities of the Engagement Core?
I would ensure that health equity is a cross-cutting theme by incorporating it into all core functions, such as reviewing research proposals for inclusive design, developing training modules on cultural competence, and creating repositories for equity-relevant data. I would also collaborate with LEAP members to ensure patient perspectives drive our priorities.
Can you provide an example of successful mentorship in community-engaged research?
I mentored a junior investigator who was developing a community-based participatory research project with a local hospice. We worked together to build trust with community partners, adapt data collection methods, and disseminate findings through community forums. The project received subsequent funding and led to a lasting partnership.
What strategies would you use to foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders in the Consortium?
I would establish regular communication channels, such as monthly meetings and shared digital platforms, to facilitate open dialogue. I would also create working groups focused on specific topics, organize workshops, and recognize contributions to maintain engagement. Building a shared vision and celebrating small wins can keep the team motivated.
How do you stay current with developments in palliative care research methodology?
I regularly attend conferences like AAHPM and PCORI, participate in webinars, and read journals such as the Journal of Palliative Medicine. I also collaborate with methodologists and contribute to systematic reviews. This continuous learning ensures I apply the most rigorous and innovative approaches to my work.
