Cover letter sample

Dear Hiring Team,

I am excited to apply for the Art Director role at Fresh Prints. With experience building cohesive brand systems and translating business goals into high-quality visual campaigns, I can help ensure every touchpoint feels distinctively Fresh Prints.

I bring strong hands-on expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, typography, layout, photography direction, and creative production, alongside a collaborative approach to leading external partners and giving actionable feedback. I would welcome the opportunity to partner with the Creative Director and cross-functional teams to evolve a scalable visual identity while delivering quickly and thoughtfully.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sample interview questions
How would you assess and improve Fresh Prints' visual brand system in your first 90 days?

I would begin with a brand audit across paid media, sales materials, product assets, and social content to identify inconsistencies and high-impact opportunities. I would then define or refine the core system—typography, color, imagery, iconography, composition, and voice—and document practical guidelines with examples, templates, and clear governance. I would measure success through adoption, consistency in key channels, faster production, and feedback from internal teams and customers.

Describe your process for turning a business objective into an art direction for a campaign or product launch.

I start by clarifying the objective, audience, decision needed, and available production resources. I translate that into a focused creative brief, establish a small number of visual territories, and align stakeholders early on the strategic rationale before investing in execution. This approach keeps the work connected to business goals while leaving room for a strong creative point of view.

How do you give creative feedback that raises quality without discouraging designers or freelancers?

I make feedback specific, observable, and tied to the brief rather than personal preference. For example, I would explain that a layout weakens hierarchy or misses the intended customer tone, show what needs to change, and identify what is already working. I also invite the designer's perspective so the final solution improves the work rather than simply reproducing my first idea.

How do you balance rapid creative output with maintaining a premium and consistent brand standard?

I would use a tiered production model: reusable templates and systems for recurring work, defined review checkpoints, and dedicated focus time for major campaigns. I prioritize according to customer impact and business importance, communicate trade-offs early, and protect the quality bar by distinguishing fast, fit-for-purpose work from work that needs deeper craft.

How would you defend a strong visual recommendation to senior leadership when preferences differ?

I would present the recommendation in terms of audience, brand principles, expected business impact, and the trade-offs among alternatives. I would use concise visual examples and explain why the selected direction is more likely to achieve the brief, while remaining open to feedback that improves the outcome. If there is disagreement, I would propose a focused test or decision framework rather than letting subjective debate delay the work.

Join a high-performing team for an NYC-based custom apparel company

This is Crishel, the Creative Director at Fresh Prints.

I joined Fresh Prints right after college as an Artist. The job was intense. I was creating 16 designs from prompts… Every. Single. Day.

I could do it if you asked me to. But more than that, I wanted to understand how creativity could drive impact. I wanted to see how ideas moved beyond a design file and shaped how people experience a brand.

When I moved to the Growth Team, everything changed. It wasn’t just about making things look good anymore. It was about thinking like a marketer, contributing to strategy, and understanding how creative work connects to the business.

The turning point came when my manager, Jolijt, said: “Okay Crishel, you’re in charge.” After multiple attempts to find the right Creative Director, she decided to take a chance on me. That shift forced me to rethink everything. I had to unlearn habits as a graphic designer and start thinking about vision, systems, and people.

Today, creative work means more than aesthetics to me. It’s about how design serves the brand, how it makes people feel, and how it creates real value.

Now, we’re looking for creatives who want to do more than execute designs. People who want to think bigger, collaborate deeply, and help build how creative work scales at Fresh Prints.

If this sounds exciting, we’d love to hear from you!

Art Director

We’re looking for an Art Director who’s hungry to own the visual identity of one of the fastest-growing brands in the US collegiate space. You’ll be the creative authority on what Fresh Prints looks like — from brand campaigns to pitch decks to product launches — and you’ll work directly with our Creative Director to make sure every asset tells a consistent, compelling story.

This role isn’t for someone who executes on what they’re told. It’s for someone with a real point of view, the visual chops to back it up, and great taste.

What You’ll Own

Brand Identity & System

  • Lead the development and stewardship of the Fresh Prints brand system – color, typography, photography direction, iconography, and visual language
  • Ensure every asset, from a paid ad to a sales deck, is undeniably Fresh Prints
  • Build and maintain brand guidelines our team actually uses
  • Partner with the Creative Director to evolve the brand system as Fresh Prints grows

Creative Production

  • Lead art direction on brand campaigns, product launches, and marketing collateral
  • Hands-on in fashion and product photoshoots, from concept development to on-set art direction
  • Art direct and brief photographers, videographers, and freelance designers
  • Produce high-quality assets fast — from quick social graphics to polished campaigns
  • Maintain a quality bar that makes everything feel crafted, not thrown together

Creative Standards & Collaboration

  • Set and uphold the visual bar for everything that leaves the Creative team
  • Give specific, actionable creative feedback that improves the work without demoralizing the people making it
  • Collaborate closely with our Creative Director, Brand, and Marketing teams to ensure visual work serves the business
  • Represent the brand visually in cross-functional projects

Who You Are

  • You have a strong opinion about what looks good and you can defend it clearly without being precious about it
  • You have strong design fundamentals. You understand type, hierarchy, color, and layout at a level beyond personal taste
  • You understand, respect, and love the customers — you know that your job is to design for them, not design in general.
  • You think in systems, not just one-offs. Beautiful individual assets that don’t cohere into a brand aren’t good enough
  • You give feedback that makes people’s work better, not just your vision real
  • You’re fast. You know the difference between “good enough to move” and “not good enough,” and you move accordingly
  • You’ve actually been responsible for a brand’s visual identity before, not just individual executions inside one

Requirements

  • At least 4 to 6 years of design or art direction experience, including meaningful time spent in-house at a brand (not only at agencies)
  • Experience owning a corporate or consumer brand identity end-to-end
  • Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Figma fluency for collaborative design and handoff
  • Strong typography, layout, and photography direction instincts
  • A portfolio that demonstrates both conceptual range and executional consistency
  • Experience briefing and directing external creative vendors and freelancers
  • Comfort working directly with senior leadership on high-stakes work
