Cover letter sample
Dear Hiring Team,
I am excited to apply for the Manager I, Documentation role at Datadog. I bring experience leading technical writers and producing developer-focused documentation for APIs, cloud infrastructure, SDKs, and security-focused products.
I would welcome the opportunity to partner with Product and Engineering teams, strengthen documentation-as-code practices, and coach a high-performing team that helps users succeed with complex technical products.
Datadog's focus on observability, developer experience, and inclusive growth strongly aligns with how I approach documentation leadership and team development.
Sample interview questions
I start by clarifying the audience, primary task, product behavior, and success criteria with the product manager and engineering lead. I then turn the work into a documentation plan with scoped deliverables, owners, technical-review checkpoints, and release dates; when scope changes, I communicate tradeoffs early and prioritize the content that enables safe adoption first.
I use a regular cadence of one-on-ones, goal setting, content reviews, and constructive feedback tied to clear expectations. I tailor coaching to each writer's strengths and growth areas, create opportunities for stretch assignments, and use measurable outcomes such as content quality, delivery reliability, and user feedback to support development conversations.
I reproduce the workflow where possible, review source code and API definitions, inspect existing tests or examples, and interview the relevant engineers. I validate my understanding through technical review and, when appropriate, usability feedback so that the final content reflects actual user behavior rather than assumptions.
I treat documentation as a product artifact by storing it in version control, using pull requests and structured reviews, automating validation where possible, and aligning documentation updates with engineering release workflows. This approach improves traceability, reduces regressions, and lets writers collaborate effectively with developers.
I establish shared standards for structure, terminology, examples, API reference quality, and review ownership. I also create lightweight intake and prioritization processes, track recurring quality issues, and work with contributors to make it easy to submit improvements while maintaining consistent editorial and technical standards.
The Documentation team creates engaging and informative technical content, particularly our public product documentation: Datadog Docs. This is an opportunity for a Documentation Manager to help us deliver high quality technical documentation and lead one of our growing documentation teams. Our team is hands-on with the technologies that Datadog monitors, and collaborates with technical and product teams to create technical documentation for our APIs, SDKs, developer and security tools, and community developed integrations — thousands of pages of content! This role is remote in North America.
What You’ll Do:
Manage 3-5 technical writer direct reports, overseeing their day-to-day, helping them make and manage effective content project plans, formally supporting their growth and development, and fostering an environment that encourages positive engagement and performance.
Partner with our Product and Engineering teams to create and maintain public documentation for users, developers, and SREs, helping them succeed with Datadog products, features, SDKs, APIs, and developer tools.
Experiment with the product, dig into source code, and interview subject matter experts to research technical details for documentation.
Collaborate with our contributor community and greater Documentation team to develop and improve documentation standards and processes.
Who You Are:
You have 5-10 years experience researching and developing documentation for technical topics, like databases, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and performance and security monitoring.
You have 2-5 years experience managing a small team of technical writers, coaching their performance, guiding their career journey, and breaking down complex projects into achievable plans.
You have publicly available technical writing samples.
You are comfortable reading at least two programming languages (e.g. Ruby, Python, Go, bash).
You have written or managed documentation as code, and are familiar with modern infrastructure such as IaaS cloud services and containers, as well as Git/GitHub and CI/CD tooling.
You enjoy partnering with product managers, developers, and other SMEs to create robust technical documentation for developers and other types of users.
Datadog values people from all walks of life. We understand not everyone will meet all the above qualifications on day one. That’s okay. If you’re passionate about technology and want to grow your skills, we encourage you to apply.
