Cover letter sample

Dear Hiring Team,

I am excited to apply for the 1-on-1 Math Tutor role at Think Academy US. My background in mathematics education and student-centered instruction would enable me to deliver engaging, CCSS-aligned lessons that build both conceptual understanding and confidence.

I am comfortable adapting lesson plans to individual learning needs, providing clear real-time feedback, and creating a supportive online learning environment for middle-school students. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to Think Academy’s personalized learning programs and curriculum development initiatives.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sample interview questions
How would you adapt a math lesson for a Grade 6 student who is struggling with fractions?

I would first use a few diagnostic questions to identify whether the difficulty is with number sense, equivalent fractions, operations, or word problems. I would then use visual models such as number lines or fraction bars, model one example, practice together, and gradually shift responsibility to the student. I would end with a short check for understanding and provide targeted practice for the next session.

How do you keep students engaged during a one-on-one online math lesson?

I use frequent questioning, digital whiteboards, visual representations, and short problem-solving activities to keep the student actively involved. I also connect examples to the student’s interests where possible and provide specific encouragement for productive effort. Regular checks for understanding help me adjust the pace before disengagement occurs.

What is your approach to aligning tutoring with Common Core State Standards?

I begin by identifying the relevant grade-level standard and the prerequisite skills needed to reach it. I design tasks that emphasize conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, and application rather than memorization alone. I use student performance data to determine whether to reinforce foundations or extend learning beyond the current standard.

How would you provide feedback to a student after they make an error in a math problem?

I would treat the error as useful information and ask the student to explain their thinking before giving an answer. Then I would identify the specific step where the reasoning changed, offer a prompt or representation that supports correction, and have the student complete a similar problem independently. This approach preserves confidence while strengthening understanding.

How do you manage preparation and communication when tutoring multiple students remotely?

I maintain organized student notes that capture goals, prior performance, misconceptions, and next steps for each learner. Before each session, I prepare materials at the appropriate level while keeping backup activities available for pacing adjustments. Afterward, I document progress promptly and communicate concise, actionable feedback to relevant stakeholders when required.
