Sample interview questions
How have you improved a forecasting process in a prior role?

I first assessed the existing model, data sources, and forecast accuracy by business driver. I then standardized assumptions, automated recurring data inputs where practical, and introduced a regular variance-review cadence with business owners. This improved accountability and made the forecast more actionable for leadership.

How would you explain a material budget variance to an executive audience?

I would clearly state the size and direction of the variance, isolate its primary drivers, and distinguish temporary factors from structural trends. I would connect the finding to operational and strategic implications, then recommend specific actions, owners, and timing. The presentation would focus on decisions required rather than model detail.

Describe your approach to building a long-range financial plan for a growth-stage company.

I begin with the company strategy and translate it into measurable operating drivers, including customer growth, pricing, unit economics, headcount, and investment needs. I build base, upside, and downside scenarios with explicit assumptions and evaluate cash, profitability, and capacity implications. I then refresh the plan on a defined cadence as business results and priorities evolve.

How do you partner effectively with leaders who do not have a finance background?

I tailor the discussion to the leader's operating metrics and avoid unnecessary finance jargon. I use clear visualizations and connect financial outcomes to practical decisions they control. Building trust through responsiveness, transparency about assumptions, and constructive challenge helps create a productive partnership.

How have you coached or developed finance team members?

I set clear expectations, provide context on how each person's work affects company decisions, and establish regular feedback conversations. I use reviews and projects to develop both technical skills, such as modeling, and communication skills, such as presenting insights. I also delegate meaningful ownership while remaining available to remove obstacles and ensure quality.
