Cover letter sample

Dear Hiring Team,

I am excited to apply for the International Accountant position at Instructure. With experience supporting IFRS reporting, month-end close activities, reconciliations, and audit requests, I can help deliver accurate financial reporting across international entities. I bring strong attention to detail, proficiency with Excel and ERP systems, and a collaborative approach to resolving accounting issues across distributed teams.

I am particularly interested in contributing to Instructure’s global finance function by supporting statutory compliance, multi-currency accounting, and continuous process improvement. Thank you for your consideration; I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my accounting background can support your team.

Sample interview questions
How would you prepare and review IFRS financial statements for an international entity?

I would start with a detailed close checklist, confirm trial-balance completeness, reconcile material accounts, and verify that disclosures and accounting policies align with IFRS requirements. I would perform analytical reviews against prior periods, document supporting schedules, and obtain a final review before issuing the statements.

How do you manage statutory audit requests and deadlines?

I would maintain a clear audit-request tracker with owners, deadlines, supporting documents, and status updates. For each request, I would validate the underlying data, provide organized schedules and explanations, and promptly investigate any auditor follow-up questions to avoid delays.

Describe your approach to resolving an intercompany reconciliation difference.

I would first reconcile intercompany balances by entity, currency, counterparty, and transaction type, then investigate timing differences, foreign-exchange impacts, and incorrect postings. After resolving differences with the relevant teams, I would document the agreed treatment and ensure appropriate elimination entries are recorded during consolidation.

How do you maintain accuracy while managing multiple month-end or year-end deadlines?

I would use documented close calendars, standardized reconciliation templates, and clear handoffs to manage competing deadlines. I prioritize material or deadline-critical accounts first, communicate risks early, and retain sufficient working papers so reviews and audit support can be completed efficiently.

How would you identify and communicate a meaningful difference between IFRS and US GAAP?

I would compare the transaction to the recognition, measurement, presentation, and disclosure requirements under both frameworks, focusing on the relevant standard and documented company policy. I would quantify the impact, prepare supporting analysis, and consult the controller or technical accounting team when the conclusion requires review.
