Sample interview questions
How would you evolve a large modular Android codebase while continuing to ship product features quickly?

I would first map module ownership, dependency direction, build bottlenecks, and the highest-risk coupling points. I would define a target architecture with clear API boundaries and migrate incrementally through feature work, using dependency rules, CI checks, and measurable build or reliability goals so modernization does not halt delivery.

Describe how you would design reliable health-data synchronization for an Android app that must support intermittent connectivity.

I would treat local persistence as the source of truth, model sync state explicitly, and use idempotent operations with durable queues and retry policies. WorkManager would coordinate constrained background work, while conflict rules, observability, and clear user-facing states would make synchronization reliable and understandable.

What steps would you take to improve startup time and responsiveness in a Compose-based Android application?

I would begin with baseline profiles and production telemetry to identify slow initialization, blocking I/O, expensive composition, and unnecessary dependency creation. Then I would defer noncritical initialization, optimize data loading and state collection, reduce recomposition, and validate improvements with repeatable performance benchmarks and release monitoring.

How do you ensure AI-assisted code changes are safe to ship in a health-focused consumer application?

I use AI tools to accelerate exploration and implementation, but I retain responsibility for design, correctness, security, and privacy. Every generated change should receive normal code review, targeted tests, static analysis, and validation against product requirements, especially around permissions, sensitive data, lifecycle behavior, and failure modes.

How would you lead technical planning for a cross-functional Android initiative involving product, design, backend, and iOS teams?

I would align the group on the user outcome, technical constraints, interfaces, milestones, and explicit ownership early. I would document decisions and risks, break the work into independently deliverable slices, maintain regular cross-functional check-ins, and escalate tradeoffs with options before they threaten scope or launch quality.

About Us:

Future is building a personalized guidance system for lifelong health. We help people understand what to do next for their body, goals, and stage of life — then support them in turning those decisions into sustained behavior change. By combining AI, human expertise, personal health data, and accountability, Future helps members improve performance today while building the resilience, capacity, and healthspan they need for decades to come.

About the Role:

We’re hiring a Lead Android Engineer to set the technical direction for Future’s Android products and build the experiences our members use every day.

You’ll lead work across our phone and Wear OS apps. You’ll shape core journeys such as onboarding, coach messaging, scheduling, guided workouts, progress tracking, health-data integration, and video calls. You’ll work with product, design, backend, and iOS engineers on a small, senior team.

This is a hands-on role. You’ll move between product details and system architecture, write production code, guide technical decisions, and help other engineers do their best work.

What You’ll Own:

  • Member Experience: Lead Android implementation for the experiences that connect members with their coaches and help them follow through on their plans. Build polished, accessible interfaces with Jetpack Compose and Future’s design system.
  • Android Architecture: Set direction for a multi-module Kotlin codebase built around Compose, coroutines and flows, dependency injection, and unidirectional state. Improve module boundaries, data ownership, navigation, and offline behavior as the product grows.
  • Connected Health and Wearables: Guide the systems that connect Future with Wear OS, Health Connect, heart-rate data, sensors, and the Android device lifecycle. Protect member data and design for intermittent connectivity.
  • Reliability and Performance: Own app startup, responsiveness, media playback, foreground services, background work, real-time calls, and data synchronization. Use crash, performance, and release telemetry to find problems before members encounter them.
  • Engineering Excellence: Set expectations for code quality, testing, observability, and maintainability. Strengthen unit, integration, UI, and end-to-end coverage with JUnit, Robolectric, Espresso, and Appium.
  • Delivery and Release Quality: Improve Gradle builds, GitHub Actions, Fastlane automation, and Google Play delivery. Help the team ship often without trading away stability.
  • Team Leadership: Lead the Android team through technical planning, project execution, design discussions, pairing, and code review. Keep engineers aligned on priorities, decisions, and delivery risks.
  • AI-Assisted Development: Use coding agents and AI tools to speed up exploration, implementation, testing, and review. Apply engineering judgment to validate their output before it reaches members.

Who You Are:

Experience and Background

  • You have 8+ years of professional Android engineering experience, including ownership of complex consumer applications.
  • You have deep Kotlin knowledge and a strong command of Jetpack Compose, coroutines, Flows, dependency injection, and Android lifecycle behavior.
  • You have led architecture work in a large or modular Android codebase.
  • You have shipped and supported applications through Google Play.
  • You understand performance, offline state, background execution, media playback, permissions, and device fragmentation.
  • You have strong testing habits across unit, integration, UI, and end-to-end layers.
  • You can debug across UI, networking, persistence, services, devices, and CI.
  • You have led complex projects from planning through launch, partnering with product and design while managing scope, dependencies, risks, and delivery.
  • You have operated at lead scope, regardless of title.
  • You use AI coding tools in your development workflow and know how to verify their output.

Domain Passion

You care about health, fitness, and the role that thoughtful coaching can play in someone’s life.

Working Style

  • You care about interaction quality, accessibility, performance, and the small details members notice.
  • You make architectural decisions based on product needs and operating constraints.
  • You raise concerns early and bring possible solutions.
  • You share context, invite feedback, and help other engineers grow.
  • You take ownership from product discovery through production support.

Nice to Have

  • Experience building Wear OS applications or working with the Wearable Data Layer.
  • Experience with Health Connect, health sensors, or Bluetooth devices.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and other laws and regulations that apply to health products and services.
  • Experience with Media3, CameraX, foreground services, or real-time audio and video.
  • Experience designing offline-capable applications with Room, WorkManager, and background synchronization.
  • Experience with fitness, health, coaching, or other personalized consumer products.
  • Experience evolving a design system across a large Compose application.
