Sample interview questions
How have you advised a manager through a complex employee relations or performance issue?

I begin by gathering objective facts, reviewing relevant policies and prior documentation, and assessing risk and consistency. I then coach the manager on clear expectations, respectful communication, documentation, and an appropriate action plan, involving legal or senior HR partners when escalation is warranted. I follow through to ensure the outcome is fair, timely, and supports both the employee and business.

Describe how you use people data to identify and solve a business problem.

I combine quantitative signals, such as attrition, engagement, promotion, performance, or absence trends, with qualitative feedback from leaders and employees. After identifying likely root causes, I translate the findings into practical actions with owners and measurable success criteria. I then monitor results and adjust the intervention based on evidence.

How would you help a leader improve manager capability within their organization?

I would first assess the capability gap through observations, employee feedback, performance outcomes, and leader input. I would provide targeted coaching and tools on topics such as feedback, goal setting, difficult conversations, and career development, while reinforcing accountability through regular follow-ups. The goal is to help managers build sustainable habits rather than rely on HR to resolve every issue.

What approach would you take to implementing a new people policy across a fast-moving business?

I would clarify the policy objective, affected populations, legal or compliance requirements, and operational impacts before developing an implementation plan. I would align key stakeholders, create concise manager and employee communications, offer training or office hours for questions, and establish a feedback mechanism. After launch, I would review adoption and issues to refine the process.

How do you build credibility with senior leaders while maintaining trust with employees?

I build credibility by understanding business priorities, providing direct and evidence-based advice, and reliably following through on commitments. With employees, I listen carefully, explain process boundaries transparently, and handle sensitive information appropriately. I stay principled and consistent, even when the advice is difficult, so both groups see HR as a fair and trusted partner.
