Sample interview questions
Describe a backend service you built or substantially improved. How did you ensure it was scalable and reliable?

I would explain the service boundaries, expected traffic and failure modes, then describe the API design, data access patterns, observability, automated tests, and deployment approach. I would include measurable outcomes such as improved latency, reduced errors, or better deployment reliability.

How would you approach maintaining and gradually modernizing a legacy Node.js service while new services are being built in Clojure?

I would first document behavior, dependencies, ownership, and production risks, then add tests and monitoring around critical paths. I would modernize incrementally using stable interfaces or a strangler approach, prioritizing high-risk or high-change areas and avoiding a disruptive rewrite.

What principles do you use when designing a RESTful API in a service-oriented architecture?

I focus on clear resource boundaries, consistent naming, appropriate HTTP semantics, validation, versioning strategy, idempotency where needed, and actionable error responses. I also consider authentication, rate limits, observability, backward compatibility, and the service contract for downstream consumers.

Tell us about a difficult production issue you debugged in a distributed or cloud-based system.

I would describe how I used logs, metrics, traces, recent deployment history, and reproduction steps to narrow the issue. After resolving the immediate problem, I would add safeguards such as alerts, tests, dashboards, runbook updates, or resilience improvements to prevent recurrence.

How do you collaborate effectively with product managers, DevOps, and other engineers when delivering backend work?

I clarify outcomes, technical constraints, dependencies, and operational requirements early in planning. I communicate trade-offs plainly, keep stakeholders updated on risks, seek feedback through design and code reviews, and use shared documentation to ensure decisions remain understandable and actionable.
