Sample interview questions
Describe how you would manage a complex involuntary termination involving a client, an employee, local counsel, and payroll.

I would first confirm the facts, contractual terms, applicable local legal requirements, and required documentation with the appropriate legal and payroll stakeholders. I would establish a clear timeline and communication plan, prepare the client for the conversation, and ensure the employee is treated respectfully and consistently. After the meeting, I would coordinate final-pay, benefits, system access, records, and follow-up communications while documenting every decision and action.

How do you balance client expectations with legal compliance when a client wants to move quickly on an employee exit?

I acknowledge the client’s business objective while clearly explaining the legal, financial, and employee-relations risks of an accelerated approach. I provide practical compliant options, including required consultation steps, documentation, timelines, and risk trade-offs. My goal is to help the client reach the best possible outcome without bypassing mandatory protections or damaging the employee experience.

What approach would you take to a first-level employee relations concern with incomplete information?

I would conduct an initial, neutral fact assessment by identifying the parties involved, the key allegations, relevant policies, and immediate risk or safety concerns. I would avoid conclusions until evidence is reviewed, maintain confidentiality on a need-to-know basis, and document the information carefully. I would then coordinate the correct internal or external resources and set clear follow-up expectations with stakeholders.

How have you improved an HR or offboarding process in a previous role?

I start by mapping the existing workflow, identifying recurring delays, errors, and handoff gaps, and gathering feedback from users and partner teams. I then standardize templates, decision trees, ownership rules, and tracking metrics, using automation where it reduces manual work without compromising compliance. I measure the impact through turnaround time, documentation accuracy, stakeholder satisfaction, and exception rates.

How do you work effectively in an asynchronous, remote environment across multiple time zones?

I prioritize written clarity, maintain well-organized case records, and communicate decisions, owners, deadlines, and risks in a format that others can act on independently. I use structured updates and documentation to reduce unnecessary meetings while escalating urgent matters promptly. I also plan work around jurisdictional deadlines and communicate availability early when sensitive cases require live coordination.
