Sample interview questions
How do you ensure an accurate and timely month-end close across multiple legal entities?

I use a documented close calendar with defined owners, deadlines, review checkpoints, and escalation paths. I prioritize high-risk accounts and material estimates, review reconciliations and journal entries for support and consistency, and complete variance analysis before final reporting. After each close, I track recurring issues and improve the process through standardized templates or automation.

Describe your approach to intercompany accounting and reconciliations.

I establish clear intercompany policies, standardized account mappings, and agreed settlement timelines among entities. I reconcile reciprocal balances regularly, investigate differences promptly with the relevant finance teams, and ensure eliminations are supported for consolidation. I also monitor aging items to prevent unresolved balances from carrying into future periods.

What factors do you consider when reviewing a balance-sheet reconciliation?

I verify that the account balance agrees to the general ledger, supporting documentation is current and complete, reconciling items are clearly explained, and aging items have an owner and resolution plan. I also assess whether the account activity is reasonable based on the business context and whether the reconciliation complies with company policy and control requirements.

How have you developed and managed accounting team members?

I set clear performance expectations, assign responsibilities according to skill level, and create regular review and feedback routines. I provide coaching on technical accounting, reconciliations, and quality standards while using cross-training to reduce key-person risk. I also encourage team members to identify process improvements and recognize strong performance.

How would you explain an unfavorable financial variance to non-accounting leadership?

I would begin with the business impact, then explain the primary drivers in concise, nontechnical language. I would distinguish recurring operating changes from one-time accounting items, support the explanation with relevant data, and describe any corrective actions or forecast implications. This approach helps leadership make decisions without losing the necessary financial context.
