Sample interview questions
I would separate domain logic, API layers, data access, and asynchronous work clearly, use well-defined models and service boundaries, and establish automated tests around critical investment workflows. I would also plan for observability, secure authentication and authorization, database indexing, background jobs, and versioned APIs so the service can scale without sacrificing auditability.
I would first assess impact and stabilize the service, then use logs, metrics, tracing, browser network inspection, and error reporting to identify whether the failure originates in the client, API, database, or infrastructure. After reproducing the issue where possible, I would implement a focused fix, validate it through tests and staged deployment, and document the root cause and preventive actions.
I use Docker and Docker Compose to create consistent local environments that closely match runtime dependencies. In CI/CD, I typically automate linting, tests, security checks, image builds, environment-specific deployment steps, and post-deployment verification, with clear rollback options for production releases.
I would manage infrastructure through reviewed, version-controlled Terraform or CDKTF configurations and keep environment differences explicit. Secrets should never be committed to source control; I would use a managed secrets workflow such as 1Password CLI or a cloud secret manager, apply least-privilege access, rotate credentials, and ensure deployment pipelines retrieve secrets securely.
I would provide concise design context, break work into appropriately scoped tasks, and use code reviews as a teaching tool rather than only a gate. Pairing on complex problems, documenting recurring patterns, and setting clear ownership expectations help the developer grow while keeping the team aligned on quality and delivery priorities.
