Sample interview questions
I would first clarify business rules, user flows, technical architecture, dependencies, and financial or regulatory impact. I would rank risks by likelihood and severity, then prioritize automation for critical API workflows, data integrity, permissions, failure handling, boundary conditions, and performance-sensitive paths. The strategy would define coverage, test data, environments, observability needs, and release criteria with the development team.
I use a layered approach: unit-level quality signals where available, API and contract tests for service behavior, integration tests for dependencies, and a limited set of end-to-end UI scenarios for critical customer journeys. I also validate asynchronous processing, retries, idempotency, error responses, data consistency, and service observability. This approach provides fast feedback while avoiding an overly fragile end-to-end suite.
I would gather execution logs, screenshots or traces, request and response details, environment information, test data state, and relevant application metrics. I would determine whether the issue is caused by product behavior, timing, unstable dependencies, environment health, data collisions, or test implementation. After identifying the cause, I would fix the underlying issue where possible and improve diagnostics or synchronization so the test remains reliable.
I begin by defining realistic workload models, transaction volumes, concurrency, peak patterns, service-level objectives, and key business flows. Using tools such as k6, JMeter, or Locust, I run baseline, load, stress, spike, and endurance tests while monitoring latency, error rates, resource utilization, database behavior, and queue or downstream-service health. I then document bottlenecks, reproduce them where needed, and work with engineers to validate improvements.
I use clear test architecture, reusable service and page abstractions, stable selectors and contracts, centralized configuration, deterministic test data, and meaningful reporting. I keep test suites aligned with risk and execution speed, separating smoke, regression, integration, and performance coverage. Regular code reviews, refactoring, documentation, and monitoring of flaky-test trends help keep the framework reliable and useful over time.
