Sample interview questions
I would begin with a driver-based model covering recurring revenue, collections timing, gross margin, headcount, vendor commitments, infrastructure costs, taxes, and planned fundraising. I would reconcile the model to the general ledger and bank balances, then create base, upside, and downside scenarios with explicit assumptions. I would review forecast variance monthly and update leadership on runway, cash risks, and decisions needed.
I would first document the current close calendar, systems, account ownership, recurring journal entries, and reconciliation gaps. Next, I would prioritize material accounts such as cash, revenue, deferred revenue, AP, payroll, and equity, establish deadlines and review controls, and automate repeatable work where possible. The goal would be a reliable, well-documented close that produces decision-useful reporting quickly without creating unnecessary process overhead.
I would review contracts, billing terms, product delivery obligations, renewals, credits, and implementation components to define the appropriate recognition policy. I would maintain contract-level schedules that reconcile bookings, billings, deferred revenue, and recognized revenue to the ledger. I would also partner with Sales and Legal so nonstandard terms are identified before execution and assessed for accounting impact.
I would present the variance clearly, quantify its impact on cash, runway, and key operating metrics, and distinguish temporary timing issues from structural changes. I would explain the underlying drivers using concise visuals and provide scenario-based options, such as adjusting hiring, spend, pricing, or collection efforts. The discussion would end with a clear recommendation, accountable owners, and timing for follow-up.
I would prioritize ARR and growth, bookings and billings, gross margin, net revenue retention, churn, CAC efficiency, burn multiple, operating expenses by function, cash burn, and runway. The specific reporting cadence would depend on the stage, but each metric should connect to an operational decision. I would ensure definitions are consistent across leadership, investor, and board reporting.
