Sample interview questions
How do you ensure accuracy when interpreting a fast-paced conversation?

I listen for the speaker's full meaning, including context and tone, before interpreting as faithfully and clearly as possible. I use clarification when necessary, avoid adding personal interpretation, and maintain a steady pace so all parties can follow the conversation.

What would you do if a client is having difficulty connecting to the VRI session?

I would calmly confirm the immediate issue, guide the client through basic troubleshooting steps within my scope, and keep communication professional. If the problem requires deeper technical support, I would promptly follow the escalation process to a manager or IT team.

How do you maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries during assignments?

I follow the applicable code of professional conduct, interpret only what is said without giving advice or opinions, and protect all information encountered during an assignment. I also work from a private setting and use secure, approved systems.

Describe how you prepare your remote workspace for video interpreting.

I verify my internet connection, computer performance, webcam, headset, lighting, and backdrop before availability begins. I also minimize distractions, ensure privacy, keep required software updated, and have a plan for promptly reporting technical interruptions.

How would you handle a situation where you do not understand a term or dialect used by a speaker?

I would professionally ask the speaker to repeat, slow down, or clarify the term rather than guessing. If the communication cannot be accurately interpreted because of a dialect or terminology limitation, I would follow the organization's procedure for notifying the appropriate party or requesting reassignment.
