Sample interview questions
I would prioritize the test pyramid: broad API and service-level coverage for business rules and edge cases, focused UI tests for critical user workflows, and a small set of end-to-end tests for high-value integrations. This provides fast feedback while limiting slow and brittle browser-based tests.
I would run fast linting, unit, and API tests on pull requests, publish clear reports and artifacts, and gate merges on agreed quality thresholds. Longer regression, compatibility, or concurrency suites can run on scheduled builds or pre-release environments, with failures routed to owners and tracked to resolution.
Reliable tests use stable locators, deterministic test data, isolated environments, explicit state validation, and condition-based waits instead of fixed delays. I would also minimize external dependencies, capture diagnostics on failure, and regularly remove or refactor unstable tests.
I would validate request contracts, authentication, idempotency, error handling, status transitions, and eventual consistency. I would also test boundary conditions, retries, concurrency, queue or worker failures, and use SQL or observability data to verify that processed records are complete and correct.
I communicate the affected workflow, environment, severity, reproducible steps, expected versus actual behavior, logs or screenshots, and business impact. For release decisions, I summarize coverage, pass rates, known risks, and recommended next actions in concise language appropriate for each audience.
