Sample interview questions
I begin with a structured psychiatric assessment while establishing rapport and understanding the patient's immediate concerns, safety risks, medical context, and functional barriers. I then prioritize actionable clinical needs and partner with the care team to address social factors, such as transportation, food access, or home support, that may affect the treatment plan.
I would clearly communicate the clinical goals, recommended next steps, warning signs, and follow-up needs in practical language. Advocates can help remove access barriers and reinforce the plan, while I retain responsibility for psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment decisions, and clinically appropriate documentation.
I use consistent evaluation templates, document contemporaneously, and create clear follow-up and escalation plans before closing each encounter. I also triage by acuity, protect time for documentation, and use secure technology workflows to ensure continuity and reduce missed handoffs.
When implementing a new clinical system, I first learned the essential workflows and identified points that could affect patient safety or documentation quality. I shared specific feedback with the implementation team, adjusted my routines quickly, and helped create a reliable process that preserved a positive patient experience.
I would conduct an immediate risk assessment, determine the patient's location and available supports, and follow established emergency protocols. Depending on acuity, I would coordinate emergency services or crisis resources, involve appropriate supports with consent or as clinically required, and document the assessment and actions thoroughly.
