Sample interview questions
How do you ensure accuracy when interpreting an unfamiliar medical or legal term during a live call?

I listen for the complete context, use the accepted equivalent when I know it, and request clarification or repetition when necessary rather than guessing. I preserve the speaker’s meaning, tone, and level of detail while following the applicable interpretation protocol.

How do you maintain confidentiality and impartiality as an interpreter?

I treat all information heard or seen during an assignment as confidential, work only from a private and secure environment, and do not discuss calls afterward. I interpret everything said faithfully without adding opinions, advice, omissions, or personal advocacy.

Describe how you would handle a caller who speaks quickly or talks over another participant.

I would politely intervene using the interpreter role, ask participants to speak one at a time and in manageable segments, then interpret each complete thought accurately. This keeps the exchange orderly while ensuring no important information is lost.

What steps do you take to prepare your remote interpreting workspace and technology?

I use a quiet, private workspace with reliable internet, a tested headset and camera, and secure access to the required platform. Before availability periods, I verify audio/video settings, minimize distractions, and ensure I can follow confidentiality requirements.

How do you respond when cultural context may affect a participant’s understanding?

I first provide a complete and neutral interpretation without changing the message. If clarification is needed, I explain the communication issue briefly in my interpreter capacity and allow the parties to decide how to proceed, while remaining impartial.
