About this role.

AI Summary

This mid-level Backend Engineer role builds and operates .NET/C# services for Apaleo’s Invoice & Tax domain in a hospitality SaaS platform. The engineer owns work from requirement validation and architecture through database design, REST APIs, testing, release, and production monitoring. Core technical expectations include .NET 10, Docker, PostgreSQL, cloud services, asynchronous messaging, and microservice/API architecture. The domain requires careful implementation of multi-country invoicing, tax, and compliance requirements under regulatory and customer deadlines. The team is evolving from Scrum toward Kanban and expects proactive risk communication and strong end-to-end ownership.

Sample interview questions
How would you design a backend service to support country-specific invoicing and tax rules without creating unmaintainable conditional logic?

I would separate stable invoice-domain workflows from jurisdiction-specific rule implementations. I would use well-defined policy or strategy interfaces, version tax rules by effective date, keep rules auditable, and cover each jurisdiction with focused automated test suites and representative end-to-end scenarios.

Describe how you would ensure quality when there is no dedicated QA function.

I would build quality into delivery through clear acceptance criteria, unit tests for business rules, integration tests for database and API boundaries, and end-to-end tests for critical invoice flows. Before release, I would use peer review, observability checks, staged rollout where possible, and production monitoring with actionable alerts.

What factors would you consider when designing an asynchronous workflow using Kafka or a message bus for invoice processing?

I would define message contracts and ownership, design consumers for idempotency, include correlation IDs for traceability, and plan for retries, dead-letter handling, ordering requirements, and schema evolution. Because invoices are compliance-sensitive, I would also ensure durable audit records and clear recovery procedures for failed processing.

How would you handle a regulatory deadline when requirements are incomplete or delivery risk is increasing?

I would identify the uncertainty early, break the work into the smallest testable increments, document assumptions, and communicate scope, dependency, and timeline risks to the product manager and stakeholders. I would propose options such as a compliant minimum scope, feature flags, or phased delivery rather than waiting until the deadline is at risk.

How do you approach monitoring and resolving a production issue in a backend service you own?

I start by assessing customer and compliance impact, using logs, metrics, traces, and recent deployment history to narrow the cause. I stabilize the service through rollback, mitigation, or controlled degradation if needed, then fix the root cause, add regression coverage and monitoring, and share a concise post-incident follow-up with preventive actions.

Join Apaleo and Shape the Future of Hospitality Tech!

Apaleo is the world’s most open, API-first property management platform, powering the next generation of hospitality operations. Our modular, AI-powered infrastructure lets hoteliers customise their tech stack, automate routine work and deliver seamless, personalised guest experiences, backed by best-in-class apps and autonomous AI agents that adapt to every stay.

We’re looking for a Mid-Level Backend Engineer to join our Invoice & Tax team. This is where hospitality meets regulation: every property Apaleo powers needs to invoice correctly and handle tax right, in every country it operates in. If you like the idea of solving real compliance problems with clean, well-tested code, and owning your work end to end, read on.

What You’ll Be Up To

  • Own backend projects end to end: from validating requirements with the product manager, through architecture and technical breakdown, to implementation and release.
  • Build and extend backend services using .NET 10, running in Docker containers.
  • Develop features from database design through business logic to RESTful APIs, with a direct line to how tax and invoicing rules across multiple countries shape the implementation.
  • Write clean, well-tested code, including unit and end-to-end tests. We don’t have a dedicated QA function, so you’ll take full ownership of making sure what you ship holds up in production.
  • Monitor your own services in production, and identify and resolve issues early.
  • Work against dual deadlines on invoicing and tax, driven by regulatory requirements as well as customer commitments, and escalate early when something’s at risk.
  • Collaborate closely with your product manager, frontend engineers and other backend engineers in an agile team where your ideas and feedback are valued.

What You’ll Bring to the Team

  • A degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Solid, independent experience delivering backend features end to end in a cloud environment.
  • Strong .NET / C# backend development experience.
  • A genuine tolerance for tax, legal and compliance subject matter. You don’t need deep expertise from day one, but multi-country tax and invoicing legislation is core to this role, not a side detail, so it needs to hold your interest.
  • A meticulous, detail-driven working style. Compliance work leaves little room for loose ends.
  • A proactive approach to communication: comfortable clarifying requirements, flagging risk and escalating early rather than waiting to be asked.
  • Hands-on experience with at least some of the following:
  • Relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
  • Docker and containerised workflows.
  • Cloud platforms such as AWS (Azure experience is also welcome) and message-based or asynchronous systems, such as Kafka or Azure Service Bus.
  • Familiarity with microservices concepts and API-driven architecture.
  • Comfort breaking down tasks, estimating work and delivering features incrementally.
  • Experience with, or interest in, AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or similiar.
  • Fluent English.

Nice to have

  • First experience with Kafka or other streaming / messaging systems.
  • Exposure to Kubernetes / ECS or cloud-native DevOps practices.
  • Basic experience with performance tuning or database optimizations.
  • Experience working in SaaS or API-first products.

Good to know before you apply

A little more context on the domain and the team, so you know what you’re stepping into.

  • This role sits in a compliance-heavy space. Much of the implementation work is shaped by how different countries legislate tax and invoicing, so this is genuinely interesting problem-solving territory if that kind of depth appeals to you.
  • Invoice & Tax is also central to how Apaleo grows: as we expand into new markets, this team drives the discovery and requirements work that makes sure our platform is ready to operate there. You’ll have a direct hand in shaping how Apaleo enters new countries.
  • The team is growing and evolving, including a move from Scrum to a Kanban way of working.
