Sample interview questions
I would explain the workload and performance targets, then describe the architecture, profiling approach, and bottlenecks identified. I would cover trade-offs such as memory use versus latency, batching versus real-time processing, and complexity versus maintainability, supported by measured results.
I would first establish reproducible symptoms and collect metrics, logs, traces, and system-level signals such as CPU, memory, disk, and network behavior. I would narrow the issue through controlled experiments, profiling and packet or process analysis where appropriate, then validate the fix with regression and load testing.
I would use secure defaults, least privilege, strong authentication and authorization, encryption in transit, careful input validation, and secret-management practices. I would also consider data retention, logging hygiene, threat modeling, dependency risk, and testing for common abuse cases.
I would describe adding targeted unit, integration, or end-to-end tests around high-risk behavior and incorporating them into an automated pipeline. I would explain how quality gates, repeatable builds, code review, and fast feedback reduced regressions and made releases more dependable.
I begin with the architecture, primary data flows, build and test processes, and the areas most relevant to the task. I make small, well-tested changes, use documentation and knowledgeable teammates to validate assumptions, and progressively build context through debugging, code review, and production observability.

General Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain high quality software components that contribute to ExtraHop’s core platform and product capabilities.
- Collaborate closely with engineering peers, product management, UX, QA, and other partners to define requirements, architecture, and implementation details.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural planning to ensure quality, stability, scalability, and long term maintainability.
- Debug, troubleshoot, and improve software running in real world customer environments.
- Support performance, scalability, and reliability initiatives through measurement, analysis, and optimization.
- Contribute to test automation, CI/CD processes, and modern engineering practices.
- Participate in agile development methodologies and help continuously improve team processes.
- Demonstrate ownership, technical curiosity, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Often Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong programming skills in one or more of the following languages: Go, Python, C, C++, Rust, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Experience developing software on Linux or Unix environments, including debugging, tooling, and common developer workflows.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals and common Layer 2 through Layer 7 protocols.
- Familiarity with secure development concepts including encryption fundamentals and modern authentication ideas such as TLS, SAML, or OIDC.
- Ability to design and implement software with an emphasis on code quality, maintainability, and reliability.
- Strong problem solving skills, clear communication, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and navigate large or complex systems.
General Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Familiarity with containers and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools including Terraform or Ansible.
- Experience with databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, or other distributed storage technologies.
- Exposure to observability or monitoring tools including Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic, or similar systems.
- Experience working with CI/CD tools such as GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins.
- Experience building or supporting software at enterprise scale with considerations around throughput, latency, memory, and resource constraints.
- Awareness of cybersecurity practices, packet analysis tools such as Wireshark or tcpdump, or general familiarity with detection concepts.
- Ability to mentor others and contribute to a positive, collaborative engineering culture.
