Sample interview questions
How would you design a safe schema change for a widely used Terraform resource?

I would first identify state compatibility and whether the change requires a state upgrader, replacement behavior, or a deprecation period. I would document the proposed behavior, add unit and acceptance coverage for upgrades and imports, test against representative existing states, and communicate migration guidance clearly in release notes and documentation.

How do you investigate a Terraform provider lifecycle edge case reported by a customer?

I would reproduce it with a minimal configuration and capture the plan, state transitions, provider logs, and relevant API responses. I would determine whether the issue stems from schema flags, diff logic, read-after-write behavior, API semantics, or state migration, then add a regression test before shipping the fix.

What testing strategy would you use for a Go Terraform provider?

I would layer fast unit tests for expand/flatten functions, validation, and diff logic with integration tests against API boundaries and end-to-end acceptance tests for core resource lifecycles. I would include import, upgrade, drift, deletion, and backwards-compatibility cases in CI, while keeping test fixtures isolated and repeatable.

How would you prioritize provider improvements when customer requests, OSS issues, and roadmap work compete?

I would assess user impact, reliability risk, adoption value, strategic alignment, implementation cost, and urgency. I would use issue patterns and usage signals to distinguish isolated requests from systemic friction, make the trade-offs visible in a roadmap or RFC, and align on priorities with product and engineering stakeholders.

How do you drive a technical proposal to consensus in an asynchronous organization?

I would write a concise RFC that defines the problem, goals, non-goals, alternatives, risks, compatibility implications, and recommendation. I would request feedback from affected peers early, respond to concerns with evidence and revisions, document the final decision, and translate it into clear implementation milestones.

About Supabase

Supabase is the Postgres development platform, built by developers for developers. We provide a complete backend solution including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. All services are deeply integrated and designed for growth.

About the Role

We are looking for a Software Engineer: IaC Platform Experience to join our Interfaces team and own the Terraform provider as a core part of Supabase’s developer platform.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on the Go codebase behind the Supabase Terraform provider. You will partner with product and engineering leadership on roadmap priorities, drive technical execution, and ensure we ship a reliable, predictable, and well-documented Terraform experience for developers at scale.

You will focus on resource behavior, lifecycle correctness, schema evolution, upgrade safety, and practical migration paths for existing users.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in async, fast-paced environments and enjoys building practical platform primitives that millions of developers can rely on.

What You’ll Own

  • Own the Go Terraform provider codebase, including architecture, implementation quality, test strategy, and release readiness.

  • Improve Terraform provider reliability and ergonomics, including resource behavior, data sources, lifecycle edge cases, and upgrade safety.

  • Drive technical strategy for IaC workflows through design docs, RFCs, and iterative delivery.

  • Build practical migration and interoperability paths for existing Terraform users.

  • Partner with product and engineering leadership in a shared roadmap model to define priorities, scope, and outcomes.

  • Monitor customer feedback, OSS issues, and usage signals to continuously improve the Terraform experience.

  • Create clear documentation and examples that make IaC workflows easier to understand and adopt.

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience in developer platforms, infrastructure tooling, or distributed systems.

  • Strong proficiency in Go and a track record of shipping production-grade developer tooling.

  • Deep experience with Terraform provider behavior, declarative resource models, and lifecycle edge cases.

  • Strong understanding of schema design, versioning, and backwards compatibility.

  • Experience owning or contributing to a provider codebase with real user adoption and upgrade constraints.

  • Experience with testing strategy for providers and IaC tooling (unit, integration, and end-to-end) plus CI/CD pipelines.

  • Familiarity with release/versioning strategies and backwards compatibility in widely used developer tooling.

  • Strong written communication and a track record of clear technical design docs and RFCs.

  • Nice to have: familiarity with TypeScript-based tooling, Supabase CLI workflows, and GitHub-centric automation.

Decision-Making and Collaboration

  • This role operates in a shared consensus model for major technical decisions with peers and leadership.

  • You are expected to lead proposals and recommendations, align stakeholders, and move decisions to clear outcomes.
