Sample interview questions
How do you approach a commission variance identified during the monthly close?

I first validate the participant, plan assignment, effective dates, source transaction, crediting rules, quota, rate, and prior adjustments. I reconcile the issue across Xactly and source systems, document the root cause and proposed correction, and escalate plan-interpretation questions for approval before changing a payment outcome.

Describe your experience administering Xactly Incent.

I have used Xactly Incent to maintain participant records, hierarchies, quotas, rates, plan assignments, and access. I am comfortable supporting plan configuration and testing, validating results before release, and maintaining evidence so calculations can be traced from source data through payment.

How would you ensure a payment file is accurate before sending it to Payroll?

I would complete source-data validation, reconcile calculated commissions to Salesforce, HR, and Finance records, review exception reports and material period-over-period variances, and confirm all approved true-ups are documented. I would then obtain the required sign-off and retain the reconciliation and approval evidence with the final payment file.

How do you explain an unfavorable commission finding to a salesperson or manager?

I communicate clearly, respectfully, and factually. I explain the relevant plan rule, show the supporting transaction or calculation details, distinguish a data correction from a plan-policy decision, and outline the next step or escalation path if the person still disputes the result.

What controls would you implement for an auditable sales-compensation process?

I would establish documented procedures, defined cutoffs, source-to-system reconciliations, role-based access, change logs for plans and participant data, independent review of payment files, and retained approvals for adjustments. I would also maintain clear evidence for plan letters, configuration testing, accrual support, and each monthly close.

Why this role matters

Sales, channel, renewals, BDR, and corporate bonus participants across Semperis count on being paid correctly and on time. As our Senior Sales Compensation Analyst, you’ll own the system and the monthly cycle that make that happen. You’ll run calculations in Xactly Incent, tie every result back to its source data, and give Finance a close it can trust. The hardest part of the job is judgment: knowing when a variance is a data fix you can make yourself, and when it’s a plan question that needs a leader’s approval before anything moves.

What you’ll own

· Run the recurring commission and incentive calculation cycle, from source data validation to an approved payment file delivered to Payroll within the monthly close window.

· Investigate and resolve discrepancies in assignments, splits, credits, quotas, rates, currencies, and adjustments, and document every true up and correction before payment is released.

· Reconcile Xactly Incent against Salesforce, HR, payroll, and Finance systems each month and quarter, and support close, including commission accruals, in partnership with our Revenue Analyst.

· Build and maintain audit ready documentation and controls so the commission process is repeatable and any reviewer can follow it.

· Administer Xactly Incent across all company plans, keeping participant data, access, hierarchies, quotas, rates, and plan assignments current as people join, move, and leave.

· Lead the annual implementation of every compensation plan in Xactly, working with Revenue Operations and the Global Compensation Director through configuration, testing, and approvals.

· Own plan letter administration end to end, from preparation and issuance through signature tracking.

· Turn large datasets into clear reporting on attainment, commissions, and payments, and help managers and employees understand their plans and statements, including findings they may not want to hear.

What success looks like

· Every cycle closes on time, with an approved payment file and every discrepancy investigated and documented before sign off.

· Each period ties out across systems, with variances explained and evidence ready for auditors.

· Every approved plan is configured, tested, and live before the plan year opens, and every participant holds a current signed plan letter.

· Participants understand their statements, and disputes are resolved with facts rather than escalation.

Who you’ll work with

You’ll report to our Director of Finance and work closely with the CFO, Revenue Operations leaders and plan owners, and department heads across sales and channel. You’ll also partner with HR, Legal, Payroll, Accounting, FP&A, our Xactly technical account manager, and external auditors.

What you’ll bring

· 3-5 years of relevant experience in incentive compensation or commission operations

· Hands on experience administering Xactly Incent, including plan configuration, participant data, hierarchies, quotas, and rates

· Strong reconciliation skills, with a track record of tracing variances to root cause across multiple systems

· Advanced Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and lookups

· Experience maintaining documented procedures and audit evidence

· Clear, steady communication when explaining plan mechanics or delivering unwelcome findings

· Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Nice to have

· Experience with Workday and NetSuite

· Experience supporting global incentive programs across multiple countries or currencies

· Experience in a public company, high tech or SaaS environment,

· Familiarity with US GAAP including ASC 606, and background in variable pay payroll, Sales or Revenue Operations, accounting, audit or financial analysis.
