Sample interview questions
How do you apply trauma-informed care in an initial psychotherapy session?

I begin by establishing emotional and physical safety, explaining confidentiality and its limits, and inviting the client to share at their own pace. I use collaborative language, assess immediate needs and strengths, and avoid assumptions about trauma history. Together, we identify initial goals and create a treatment approach that supports choice, trust, and empowerment.

How do you ensure your clinical notes and treatment plans meet regulatory and organizational standards?

I document promptly after sessions using objective, clinically relevant language and follow the required EHR templates. My notes connect interventions, client response, progress toward goals, risk considerations, and next steps. I regularly review treatment plans with clients and update them based on clinical progress, changing needs, and program requirements.

Describe how you would respond to a client experiencing a crisis during an evening telehealth session.

I would first assess immediate safety, including risk of harm to self or others, location, available supports, and emergency contacts. I would use de-escalation techniques, develop or reinforce a safety plan when appropriate, and follow agency protocols for involving supervisors, mobile crisis services, or emergency responders. I would document the assessment, actions taken, consultation, and follow-up plan thoroughly.

How would you engage a client who is hesitant to participate in therapy?

I would use a nonjudgmental, client-centered approach and explore what feels uncomfortable or unhelpful about therapy. Rather than pressuring participation, I would validate their perspective, identify personally meaningful goals, and offer choices about pacing and session focus. Building consistency, transparency, and small achievable goals can help strengthen engagement over time.

What strategies do you use to manage a fee-for-service caseload while maintaining quality of care?

I use structured scheduling, protect documentation time, and maintain clear communication regarding attendance and cancellations. I prioritize timely notes and treatment-plan updates so administrative work does not compromise clinical presence. I also monitor caseload capacity, seek supervision when cases require additional support, and maintain boundaries that promote sustainable care.
