Sample interview questions
How would you prioritize the first advertising formats and placements for TeamSnap’s rebuilt platform?

I would start with user journeys, available inventory, advertiser demand, technical feasibility, and privacy constraints. I would rank opportunities using an expected-value model that considers reach, fill rate, eCPM, development cost, latency, user-experience risk, and measurement confidence, then validate the highest-value placements through controlled experiments.

Describe how you would design a measurement foundation for a mobile advertising product.

I would define a consistent event taxonomy for requests, impressions, viewability, clicks, conversions where permitted, delivery pacing, and placement-level performance. I would ensure instrumentation is auditable across the app, ad server, and reporting layer, establish data-quality monitoring, support third-party verification when needed, and deliver clear reporting aligned to advertiser commitments.

How would you balance advertising revenue with the experience of parents, coaches, and players?

I would set explicit ad-quality, density, frequency, placement, and latency standards before scaling inventory. Product decisions would be evaluated through user-behavior metrics, qualitative feedback, retention indicators, and experimentation, with firm guardrails against formats or targeting practices that undermine family trust.

How would you work with Ad Sales when a requested package exceeds current product capability?

I would make the delivery constraints transparent, identify whether the request can be supported through existing inventory or operational processes, and define the smallest scalable capability that closes the most important gap. I would avoid promising unsupported targeting or measurement, while using sales feedback to inform a roadmap grounded in repeatable demand rather than one-off custom work.

What factors would you use to assess whether a new ad format is economically worthwhile?

I would model incremental impressions, fill rate, sell-through, eCPM, revenue cannibalization, implementation and operational costs, latency, and expected impact on engagement or retention. I would test assumptions with a limited rollout, compare realized results with the model, and scale only if the format meets both revenue thresholds and user-experience guardrails.

🌎 About Us

At TeamSnap, we believe when the world connects through sports; the world becomes better. TeamSnap is a sports and communication platform dedicated to taking the work out of play in youth sports. We also believe our jobs should excite us, our teammates should support us and our bosses should inspire us. We empower our people to bring big ideas and tiny egos, landing us on Outside Magazine’s list of “Best Places to Work” and Built In’s “100 Best Remote-First Places to Work.”

TeamSnap is hiring a Principal Product Manager, Ads to reimagine and build an advertising solution for the next generation of our platform.

TeamSnap today has a scaled advertising business. For years, top national and regional brands have reached millions of youth sports families through the TeamSnap app. What’s next is building an ad product for where we’re going. As we bring our millions of parents, coaches, and players onto a new, unified TeamSnap experience, the ads business gets rebuilt with it, from a blank slate.

This is a unique and rare product opportunity. You’ll be rebuilding advertising at a company that has already proven the demand — real advertisers, real revenue — and playing the lead role in deciding what the future of advertising looks like at TeamSnap. The formats, the placements, the measurement, and the standards that keep all of it worthy of the families who trust us and deliver on our advertisers’ objectives.

You’ll own the product side of that ad platform end to end — partnering with Design on native ad experiences, with Engineering on the serving and measurement infrastructure, and with our Ad Sales team on the inventory and packaging they take to market. You’ll report to VP Product and work closely with senior leaders across the company on one of TeamSnap’s top strategic priorities.

What You’ll Do:

  • Own the advertising product roadmap end to end — from ad format and placement strategy through serving infrastructure, targeting, measurement, and reporting.

  • Design and launch native, integrated ad experiences in partnership with Product Design. Our thesis is that ads on TeamSnap should feel like part of the product and drive value for both our consumer users and advertisers.

  • Own the serving and targeting stack: ad server implementation, trafficking and campaign delivery workflows, private marketplace deal setup, and the first-party signal work that makes our inventory worth buying — getting the right context to the ad call so it can be used for targeting.

  • Build the measurement foundation: impression and viewability tracking, event instrumentation, third-party verification where advertisers require it, advertiser-facing reporting, and the experimentation framework to improve placements and creative over time.

  • Own ad quality, density, and user experience standards — where ads appear, how often, and what we won’t do.

  • Partner with Ad Sales and Revenue Operations to turn product capability into sellable inventory — packaging, the targeting taxonomy they sell against, rate card inputs, and campaign delivery and pacing.

  • Model and forecast the business. Build the volume, fill rate, and eCPM models that tell us which placements are worth building, and what has to be true for a given format to pay for itself.

  • Own privacy and compliance requirements for ad targeting and data use, in partnership with Legal — including how children’s data is treated, given the families we serve.

  • Work in ambiguity. Break down an undefined space into a sequenced plan, make practical tradeoffs between revenue, engineering cost, and user impact, and bring partners along with a clear point of view.

What Will Set You Up for Success:

  • 7-10 years in product management, with meaningful time spent on the publisher/supply side of the ads ecosystem — building and monetizing ad inventory inside a consumer product.

  • Direct experience launching or scaling ad products in a consumer mobile app (iOS and Android), including the platform-specific realities: SDK integration, ATT and IDFA, store policy, app release cycles, and how those constrain what you can ship and when.

  • Deep, hands-on technical fluency with the publisher ad stack: ad server implementation and trafficking (Google Ad Manager or equivalent), programmatic guaranteed and private marketplace deals, key-value and audience targeting, ad SDK integration, VAST and video formats. You should be able to hold your own in an engineering design review.

  • Command of the economics: fill rate, eCPM, RPM, sell-through, viewability, latency, and how each moves in response to product decisions. Comfortable pricing inventory without an auction to tell you what it’s worth. You can build the model yourself and defend the assumptions.

  • Experience working alongside a direct ad sales organization — translating between what sales wants to sell and what the product can actually deliver, and building the packaging that closes the gap.

  • Demonstrated judgment about ads and user experience. A track record of shipping monetization that didn’t degrade the product, and clear thinking on where the lines belong.

  • Strong data instincts. Comfortable in product analytics tools (Amplitude or similar) and SQL-adjacent enough to interrogate your own funnels rather than waiting on someone else to.

Bonus:

  • Experience with rewarded video, pre-roll, or other video monetization formats.

  • Background in a subscription business where advertising had to coexist with a paid tier without cannibalizing it.

  • Working knowledge of children’s privacy regimes — COPPA and its state-level equivalents — as they apply to advertising.

  • First-party data and audience signal work: building the pipeline that carries publisher context into targeting decisions.

  • Familiarity with sports, media, or a community-driven consumer platform.
