Sample interview questions
I establish a consistent close calendar, entity-level ownership, standardized reconciliation templates, and clear intercompany cutoffs. I review entity financials before consolidation, reconcile balances between entities, investigate variances promptly, and maintain documentation that supports both management reporting and audit requirements.
I apply U.S. GAAP while recognizing the distinct reporting and compliance requirements of each entity type. For nonprofits, I focus on restricted funding, functional expense allocations, grants, and Form 990 support; for for-profit entities, I address revenue, tax, and statutory reporting requirements, while ensuring transactions between entities are properly documented and eliminated where appropriate.
I begin with a risk assessment of cash, payments, journal entries, payroll, system access, and financial reporting. I then document processes, segregate key duties, implement approval thresholds and reconciliations, monitor exceptions, and test controls periodically so that controls remain practical as systems and transaction volumes evolve.
I develop an audit timeline early, prepare lead schedules and supporting reconciliations, assign internal owners for requests, and use a tracker to manage status and deadlines. I provide clear, well-supported responses, address questions quickly, and convert audit findings into documented remediation plans with accountable owners and due dates.
I would map the current workflow, identify data sources, manual handoffs, controls, and common errors, then prioritize improvements based on risk and time saved. Depending on the issue, I would standardize templates, improve system integrations, automate data extraction, define exception-based reviews, and validate the revised process through a controlled implementation.
