Sample interview questions
How do you prepare and validate a forecast for multiple cost centers?

I begin with a controlled baseline from the prior forecast and actuals, then collect validated driver inputs for headcount, vendors, cloud usage, and other material expenses. I reconcile changes by cost center and account, investigate unusual movements, document assumptions, and perform quality checks before loading the forecast into the planning system.

Describe how you would explain an unfavorable variance to a non-finance budget owner.

I would lead with the size and business impact of the variance, then clearly distinguish timing effects from structural changes. I would explain the key drivers in plain language, identify whether the issue is controllable, and propose next actions such as updating the forecast, correcting coding, or adjusting spend plans.

What is your approach to partnering with Accounting during monthly close?

I reconcile actuals to the forecast and prior-period trends, review accruals and material account movements, and investigate discrepancies at their source. I work with Accounting and budget owners to resolve coding, timing, and purchase-order issues promptly, ensuring reported results and future forecasts are both reliable.

How would you manage headcount-to-plan tracking in a fast-changing organization?

I maintain a position-level model that ties approved roles, incumbents, start dates, backfills, vacancies, and compensation assumptions to the budget. I regularly validate changes with People partners and hiring managers, quantify the forecast impact, and flag risks or unplanned hiring early in the planning cycle.

Give an example of a finance process you would automate.

I would target a recurring variance-reporting workflow that pulls actuals, forecast data, and headcount drivers into a standardized model or dashboard. Using controlled data sources and automated exception checks, I would reduce manual consolidation while preserving auditability, then document the process and measure time saved and error reduction.

Why Mozilla?

Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser. Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products each month, we’re shaping the next 25 years of technology and helping to reclaim an internet built for people, not companies. Our work focuses on diverse areas including AI, social media, security and more. And we’re doing this while never losing our focus on our core mission – to make the internet better for people.

The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission. Along with thousands of volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms.

About this team and role:

Mozilla Finance is responsible for strategic resource allocation, overseeing day-to-day financial operations as we scale our mission impact with new and existing products, technology, and business models.

Core Services brings together the functions Mozilla runs on: Legal, People, Data Science, Trust & Safety / Customer Experience, Strategy, IT, Cloud Engineering & Ecosystems, and Security – teams supporting every part of the Company.

We are seeking a detail-driven Senior Financial Analyst, Core Services to execute the recurring planning, reporting, and analysis that supports this portfolio. This role will be responsible for preparing the forecast, reconciling actuals through close, maintaining headcount and vendor tracking, and producing the reporting that reaches budget owners and the COO. This role reports to the Finance Manager, Core Services, who leads business partnership with the functional leaders, and works closely with teams across the organization.

To succeed, you will need to work accurately across a broad portfolio, translate variances into explanations a non-finance audience can act on, and balance competing cycle deadlines with outstanding attention to detail. This position requires a resourceful self-starter who takes recurring processes from start to finish and improves them along the way.

What you’ll do:

  • Prepare the Core Services forecast each cycle. Build and load cost center detail in Pigment, validate inputs, reconcile against the prior cycle, and document what moved along with the drivers behind it.
  • Assemble the monthly budget update. Prepare variance to plan, drivers, and open items for budget owners and the COO, ready for the Finance Manager to carry into leader conversations.
  • Partner with Accounting through monthly close. Tie out actuals, accruals, and forecast, and resolve coding and timing issues at the source rather than correcting for them downstream.
  • Maintain headcount tracking. Keep position-level tracking and the headcount-to-plan bridge current, coordinating with People and hiring managers on start dates and backfill assumptions.
  • Track vendor and cloud spend. Monitor POs, commitments, renewals, and run-rate changes across the group. Take in cloud cost information prepared by the Cloud Engineering team, carry it into Core Services and consolidated Company reporting, and review it for anomalies and initial questions.
  • Apply AI and automation to recurring work. Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort across the forecast, close, and reporting cycle, improving the speed and reliability of what the team produces. Experiment with tools and share what works.
  • Support Core Services teams day to day. Field data and reporting questions directly, escalating items that call for a partnership discussion.

What you’ll bring:

Core Experience

  • 5+ years of work experience in business unit FP&A, corporate FP&A, strategic finance, or a comparable analytical finance role, including hands-on work through a full budget and forecast cycle with close and variance analysis.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or another quantitative field, or equivalent experience.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced spreadsheet and financial modeling skills. You care about formula cleanliness, auditability, and accuracy.
  • Experience with enterprise planning tools (Pigment, Adaptive, Workday, etc.) and accounting systems (NetSuite preferred).
  • Grounding in accounting fundamentals, including accruals and the monthly close cycle.
  • Enough familiarity with cloud cost or FinOps concepts to interpret reporting prepared by a technical team and question what looks off.
  • Interest in applying AI, automation, and systems thinking to reduce manual effort in recurring finance work.
  • Ability to balance multiple competing priorities and cycle deadlines without loss of accuracy.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain a variance concisely to a non-finance audience.
  • Ability to work across functions, distilling detail into structured summaries that leaders can act on.
  • Positive attitude, intellectual curiosity, and ability to learn quickly.

Nice to have:

  • Experience supporting technical or G&A functions in a shared-services finance environment, where the internal team is the customer.
  • Experience building automations or AI-assisted workflows within a Finance context — or the drive and resourcefulness to learn.
  • Experience with BI tools, SQL, Python, Power Query, or other data querying and programming languages.

Success Factors

You will likely be happy and productive in this role if you…

  • Possess an ownership mentality. You get things done accurately with minimal oversight, proactively flagging risks to timelines.
  • Have low ego and high flexibility. You approach problems with your opinion on the best solution, but can accommodate and adjust to differing viewpoints.
  • Are resourceful. You identify alternative solutions and resources to continue progress.
  • Are looking to build depth across a complex portfolio before moving into a lead partnership seat.

What you’ll get:

  • Generous performance-based bonus plans to all eligible employees – we share in our success as one team
  • Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting (regardless of whether you contribute)
  • Quarterly all-company wellness days where everyone takes a pause together
  • Country specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday
  • One-time home office stipend
  • Annual professional development budget
  • Quarterly wellbeing stipend
  • Considerable paid parental leave
  • Employee referral bonus program
  • Other benefits (life/AD&D, disability, EAP, etc. – varies by country)
