Sample interview questions
How would you approach auditing DuckDuckGo's existing design system during your first 90 days?

I would inventory current components, patterns, tokens, documentation, platform differences, and adoption gaps, then interview designers and engineers to identify recurring friction. I would prioritize findings by user impact, implementation cost, consistency risk, and strategic product needs, delivering a roadmap with quick wins and larger foundational initiatives.

Describe how you have scaled a design system across multiple products or platforms.

I have established shared foundations such as color, typography, spacing, and interaction tokens, then built reusable components with clear usage guidance and platform-specific implementation considerations. I paired this work with governance, contribution workflows, and adoption metrics so the system could evolve without becoming a bottleneck.

How do you balance standardization with the need for product teams to move quickly and innovate?

I use a layered model: stable foundations and core components are standardized, while teams retain flexibility through composable patterns and documented extension paths. I treat exceptions as useful signals, reviewing them to determine whether the system should expand or whether a one-off solution is appropriate.

How would you align designers and engineers on shared nomenclature and workflows?

I would facilitate working sessions to map design tokens, component states, and interaction patterns to engineering concepts and code structures. The outcome would be shared naming conventions, source-of-truth documentation, and a regular operating rhythm for reviewing changes, releases, and contribution proposals.

What metrics would you use to demonstrate that a design-system investment is successful?

I would track adoption of core libraries, reduction in duplicate components, design-to-development cycle time, accessibility and visual-consistency issues, and team satisfaction. For major improvements, I would also connect system work to product outcomes such as faster experimentation, fewer defects, and more consistent user experiences across platforms.
