The role, at a glance.
Monzo is seeking a senior product leader to build and scale internal controls products that enable safe, data-driven growth. The role owns the roadmap for risk lifecycles including issues, RCSAs, controls, policy, and regulatory traceability, while managing two data and automation specialists. It requires hands-on prototyping with low-code tools, APIs, data pipelines, SQL or Python, and practical AI/LLM applications. The successful candidate will translate risk-and-controls problems into intuitive, automated workflows and drive adoption across Product, Engineering, Data, Operations, and Risk teams. This is a change-oriented leadership role in a fast-paced financial-services environment with substantial ambiguity and delivery ownership.

Sample interview questions
I would start with a clear problem inventory tied to user pain, regulatory and operational risk reduction, expected value, delivery effort, and dependencies. I would use a transparent prioritisation framework, validate assumptions through user research and data, and sequence work into small MVPs that prove value before larger-scale investment.
I would map the current RCSA workflow, identify high-signal operational and control data sources, and define measurable trigger conditions such as incident spikes, overdue actions, material process changes, or control failures. I would prototype automated alerts and evidence collection, test them with risk owners, then refine thresholds and governance to reduce noise while improving timely intervention.
A strong approach is to begin with a bounded, auditable use case, such as classifying issue evidence, drafting control narratives, or identifying missing documentation. I would use human review, access controls, prompt and output evaluation, and clear escalation paths, then measure time saved, accuracy, and user adoption before expanding the solution.
I would define the smallest outcome that solves the user problem and build a prototype using available low-code tools, SQL, APIs, and workflow automation. I would document assumptions, security and control considerations, collect usage evidence, and partner with engineering only once the value and requirements are sufficiently validated for industrialisation.
I would establish a shared mission, clear ownership areas, short delivery cycles, and regular prioritisation rituals while leaving room for experimentation. I would remove blockers, provide context on stakeholder needs and risk goals, and use visible outcomes and retrospectives to create an operating rhythm that balances autonomy with accountability.

📍London/Cardiff/UK Remote | 💰£85,000 – £115,000 + Incentive Awards tied to your performance + Benefits ✨
This role sits at the heart of our Control Discipline change agenda, building the controls product platform that powers safe growth at Monzo.
At Monzo, we don’t treat risk and controls as a bureaucratic governance process. We treat our control framework, tools, and data pipelines as an internal product – designed to give engineers, product managers, and business leads the ability to ship fast – and safely.
We are looking for a Senior Controls Product Manager to join our newly established Controls Product & Enablement team within our Controls Discipline. Sitting at the intersection of Product, Risk, Data, and Engineering, you will act as the Product Lead for Monzo’s core risk lifecycles (Issues, RCSAs, Controls, Policy, Reg Traceability).
You won’t just write requirement docs for someone else to build – you are a builder yourself. You’ll prototype low-code tools, leverage AI models, interrogate data pipelines, and architect automated workflows to turn manual risk friction into seamless, automated self-service.
⭐ Our Controls team
The role will sit within the Controls Product & Enablement team which is part of the wider Controls Discipline in Monzo’s 1st line of defence Our teams work closely with cross-functional teams across the organisation including Technology, Data, Product, Operations as well and Risk & Compliance (the 2nd line of defence).
As this is a newly established team (wherein you’ll have two direct reports already working in the team as data and automation specialists), this role holder needs to bring a flexible and adaptable mindset, as well as a willingness to deal with ambiguity as the team establishes its operating rhythm and embeds itself within the wider business.
🔑 What you’ll do (Your Product Ownership Scope)…
- Own the Controls Product Roadmap: Define the vision, strategy, and backlog for Monzo’s internal risk products, replacing static, manual cycles with smart, data-driven platforms (SmartSuite, Zango, Looker, and native AI integrations).
- Hands-on Prototyping & Automation: Directly design, prototype, and build automated workflows, API integrations, and low-code/no-code solutions. You’ll take an idea from a problem statement to a working MVP before partnering with core Engineering (if necessary) to scale or industrialise it.
- Pioneer AI in Risk Management: Champion AI adoption across the discipline. Experiment with LLM prompting, custom agents, and automated evidence-gathering tools to solve complex control problems and dramatically reduce manual drag for Monzo staff.
- Build for Real-Time Risk Intelligence: Drive the shift from annual “point-in-time” assessments to continuous, automated monitoring. Design data triggers (e.g., incident spikes, change flags) that alert risk owners in real time.
- Product Enablement & Adoption: Ensure high-impact adoption. Work closely with first line risk owners and Risk Partners to deliver clear “write once” guidance, intuitive UI/UX workflows, and enablement that allows teams to self-serve effortlessly.
- Drive Execution & Delivery: Maintain momentum across the team’s delivery plan (guiding 2 specialised data/automation direct reports), keeping senior stakeholders engaged and removing blockers without bureaucratic overhead.
🤩 We’d love to hear from you if…
- You think like a Product Manager: You obsess over user problems, value vs. effort prioritization, user experience, and shipping MVPs quickly.
- You are a Hands-On Builder: You can get under the hood with data and automation. You’re comfortable with SQL, Python (or similar), APIs, workflow tools, or low-code environments to build a working prototype yourself.
- You’re AI-Curious & Practical: You actively experiment with AI/LLMs to automate manual tasks and make workflows smarter.
- You Understand Risk & Controls: You understand fundamental risk concepts (control design, RCSAs, issue management) and see the massive opportunity to transform them through tech.
- You Thrive in Ambiguity: You enjoy starting from first principles in a fast-paced environment and turning messy operational problems into slick, scalable digital solutions.
- You have experience in leading teams through change programmes, ideally within Financial Services Controls functions.
- You are hands-on and take satisfaction in supporting colleagues, projects or tasks however big or small – and can take a range of stakeholders on the journey with you
- You’re excited by what we’re doing at Monzo
ℹ️ This role isn’t for you if…
- Your technology and data experience has primarily involved defining requirements for Data or Engineering teams to build, rather than building solutions yourself.
- You aren’t comfortable getting hands-on with data, automation tooling and technical problem solving.
- You aren’t comfortable with ambiguity, or thinking from first principles
- You don’t enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
- You aren’t happy taking an MVP approach and doing what’s good enough for now with iterative changes to follow
- Equally, if your experience is primarily technical and you don’t have sufficient understanding of risk and controls to translate control problems into effective solutions, this role is unlikely to be the right fit.
