Sample interview questions
How would you evaluate a SaaS customer contract under ASC 606?

I would identify the contract and performance obligations, determine the transaction price, assess allocation across obligations, and establish when each obligation is satisfied. I would document the conclusions, including any variable consideration, amendments, or material rights, and ensure the resulting revenue schedule agrees to billing and the general ledger.

Describe your approach to investigating a variance between the revenue subledger, billing system, and general ledger.

I would first quantify and isolate the variance by period, customer, product, and transaction type. I would review source transactions, contract changes, billing timing, journal entries, and system interfaces, then reconcile the root cause with the responsible teams and document any correction and control implications.

How do you ensure royalty or reseller payments are calculated accurately?

I would review the applicable agreement for reporting periods, rates, minimum guarantees, exclusions, and payment terms. I would validate partner reports against internal sales or usage data, recalculate key amounts, investigate exceptions, retain support, and obtain the appropriate review before payment or revenue recognition.

What Excel tools would you use to analyze a large revenue dataset?

I would use PivotTables to summarize trends and exceptions, XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP to match records between systems, and formulas such as SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, IFERROR, and date functions to test completeness and accuracy. I would also use filters, conditional formatting, and structured workpapers to make discrepancies easy to review.

How would you communicate an accounting requirement to a non-accounting stakeholder?

I would explain the business impact in plain language, describe the specific information or action needed, and provide a concise example or template where useful. I would confirm deadlines and ownership, remain available for questions, and document the final resolution so the process can be repeated consistently.
