About this role.
Affirm is hiring a Merchant Risk Analyst to evaluate credit, fraud, identity, compliance, brand, and reputational risk for new and existing merchants. The role uses business credit reports, financial documents, payment processor statements, investigative research, and market data to determine appropriate credit exposure. The analyst will monitor ongoing merchant credit, fraud, disputes, and chargeback trends while partnering closely with Sales, Business Development, Legal, and Compliance. This position also contributes to improving and automating merchant-risk evaluation processes and requires at least three years of relevant merchant risk, underwriting, fraud, collections, or lending experience.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by reviewing the merchant's business credit report, financial statements, payment processor data, ownership structure, industry, and operating history. I would then assess liquidity, leverage, revenue stability, dispute trends, and potential fraud or compliance signals before recommending an exposure limit and any monitoring requirements.
I would escalate material inconsistencies in submitted documents, weak or deteriorating financial performance, unusually high chargeback rates, adverse media, sanctions or compliance concerns, abrupt processing-volume changes, or ownership and identity-verification issues. I would document the evidence, quantify the potential exposure, and engage the appropriate Legal, Compliance, Fraud, or senior risk stakeholders.
I focus on transparent, data-supported decisions rather than viewing risk and growth as opposing goals. When risk is manageable, I may recommend conditional approval, lower initial exposure, reserve requirements, or enhanced monitoring so the business can proceed while protecting the portfolio.
I would establish baseline rates by merchant segment and monitor trends in dispute volume, dispute reason codes, refund behavior, transaction velocity, and processing volumes. Significant deviations would prompt a targeted review to determine whether the cause is operational, fraud-related, financial, or compliance-related and whether controls or exposure limits should change.
A useful opportunity is automating intake and risk triage by integrating credit-bureau, processor, identity, and adverse-media data into a standardized scorecard. This can route straightforward low-risk cases for fast decisions while flagging exceptions, missing data, and high-risk patterns for analyst review, improving consistency and turnaround time.
At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most.
As a Merchant Risk Analyst, you will assess financial risk related to credit, fraud and identity associated with the merchants. You will also coordinate with cross-functional partners to assess non-financial risk – brand, reputational, legal and compliance risk.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge or experience in e-commerce underwriting and/or commercial lending. They will also have a solid understanding of evaluating merchant financial risk based on 3rd party data, credit reports, and other merchant attributes. Prior work experience in payments, lending, banking or financial institutions is a plus!
