The role, at a glance.
This Technical Solutions Consultant role supports higher-education clients using MCSL's FAST reporting and analytics platform. The consultant will investigate issues in client environments, explain resolutions to stakeholders, and progressively assume more ownership of client work. Familiarity with Ellucian Banner is strongly preferred, while exposure to ASP.NET, Visual Studio, and JavaScript is beneficial. The role is fully remote within Canada and requires Pacific Time business hours.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by reproducing the issue, reviewing error messages and execution plans, validating affected data, and narrowing the fault to a query, procedure, or dependency. I would test a targeted fix in a non-production environment, document the change and its impact, then communicate the resolution and next steps clearly before deployment.
I would clarify the expected result, collect sample records and report parameters, and trace the report logic through its SQL, stored procedures, and source data. After identifying the discrepancy, I would validate a fix against agreed business rules and explain both the root cause and the corrective action in client-friendly terms.
I use version-controlled scripts, make the smallest safe change, test with representative data, and consider performance, permissions, rollback, and downstream reporting effects. I also document the reason for the change and ensure the fix is transferred to the core development environment when it should become part of the product.
I focus first on the operational impact, then explain the cause in plain language without unnecessary implementation detail. I provide a clear status, the proposed fix, any actions required from the client, and an expected timeline, while remaining available to answer follow-up questions.
I would connect the unfamiliar technology to the client issue or feature at hand, review the existing codebase and internal documentation, and build a small working understanding through focused testing. I would seek targeted guidance from experienced teammates, apply the learning in a controlled change, and document useful findings for future support work.
