The role, at a glance.
Monzo is hiring a senior financial-crime investigator to protect business-banking customers from fraud, money laundering, and other economic crime. The role handles complex KYB/EDD cases, multi-jurisdictional money-muling investigations, transaction-monitoring reviews, and high-quality SAR submissions to the NCA. It also includes coaching other investigators, identifying emerging typologies, and improving operational guidance with analysts. This is a fully remote UK role working a permanent out-of-hours schedule, with regular weekend coverage and an initial six-week daytime training period. Success requires deep AML and business due-diligence expertise, rigorous evidence-based research, sound regulatory judgement, and resilience in a fast-changing operational environment.

Sample interview questions
I would first secure and review the full customer, ownership, account, and transactional record. I would map counterparties, payment flows, unusual behavioural indicators, and relevant adverse information using internal data and open-source research. I would document the evidential basis for each conclusion, escalate urgent risk where needed, and determine whether restrictions, account closure, or a SAR are appropriate under policy and legal requirements.
A high-quality SAR is factual, concise, and clearly explains who is involved, what activity is suspicious, when and where it occurred, and why the activity creates suspicion. It should distinguish evidence from inference, include useful account and transaction identifiers, describe the suspected typology, and avoid unsupported assertions. The narrative must enable law enforcement to understand the risk and act on the information.
I prioritise cases based on risk, urgency, customer impact, and regulatory deadlines, while using structured investigation checklists to ensure no critical evidence is missed. I keep clear case notes as I work rather than reconstructing them later, and I raise blockers early. I also monitor quality feedback and recurring errors to improve both my own workflow and team guidance.
I would use reputable public sources to validate the company’s existence, business model, directors, beneficial owners, online presence, and adverse-media exposure. I would compare this information with onboarding declarations and observed account activity, looking for inconsistencies such as undisclosed ownership, implausible trading claims, or links to high-risk entities. I would record source reliability and ensure the findings are relevant, proportionate, and handled in line with privacy and internal policies.
I would review a sample of cases with them, identify specific gaps in evidence gathering, rationale, or policy application, and explain the risk impact of those gaps. Together, we would agree practical actions such as using a case structure, improving escalation triggers, or studying relevant typologies. I would provide timely feedback, follow up on later cases, and share recurring learning with the wider team where appropriate.
