Sample interview questions
How would you prepare a decision-ready fraud, waste, and abuse case package?

I would validate the intake information, organize supporting evidence, document the facts and analytical findings, identify applicable controls or policy considerations, and clearly state the recommended next step. I would maintain traceability to source records and ensure the package is reviewed under the direction of the authorized federal investigator.

Describe your approach to conducting a fraud risk assessment.

I would define the process and objectives, identify fraud schemes and control gaps, assess likelihood and impact, document existing mitigations, and prioritize recommended actions. I would use a structured framework such as the GAO Fraud Risk Framework and keep the assessment evidence-based and actionable.

How do you ensure accuracy when maintaining recovery, referral, and oversight tracking registers?

I establish standardized definitions, required fields, ownership, update frequency, and data-validation checks. I reconcile register entries to authoritative source documentation, maintain an audit trail for changes, and promptly resolve incomplete or conflicting information with the responsible stakeholders.

How would you handle PHI and sensitive case information in this role?

I would follow HIPAA, VA privacy requirements, and the principle of least privilege. I would use approved systems, limit distribution to authorized personnel, avoid including unnecessary sensitive details in reports, and immediately escalate any suspected privacy or security issue through the required process.

Tell us how you manage short-turnaround requests from senior stakeholders.

I first clarify the decision needed, deadline, audience, and available evidence. I prioritize the critical facts and risks, create a concise and traceable deliverable, communicate dependencies early, and conduct a final quality review to ensure the briefing is accurate, readable, and fit for leadership use.
