Sample interview questions
I would begin by identifying domain owners, stewards, and priority business decisions supported by the domain. I would facilitate working sessions to define terms, owners, calculation logic, sensitivity classifications, and relationships, then publish these definitions in the data catalog with a review and approval workflow. Finally, I would measure adoption and resolve duplicate or conflicting terminology through ongoing governance forums.
I would include metadata completeness, percentage of critical datasets with assigned owners and stewards, glossary adoption, lineage coverage, data-quality rule pass rates, policy exceptions, and time to resolve quality incidents. The dashboard should distinguish enterprise-level progress from domain-level accountability and enable teams to prioritize remediation.
I would confirm the business purpose, formula, scope, owner, and intended users with stakeholders. I would then map the definition to technical assets such as source tables, columns, transformations, lineage, data-quality checks, classifications, and access policies. I would validate the metadata with both business and engineering partners before publishing it in the catalog.
I would clarify the underlying risk, business objective, and constraints for each group, then document the decision points and options. I would use the governance council or designated decision-maker to establish accountable ownership, agree on a policy, and capture any exceptions. Afterward, I would convert the decision into implementation requirements, documentation, and measurable controls.
I use SQL to profile datasets, identify null or duplicate values, validate referential integrity, compare metric outputs, and monitor conformance to required metadata or quality thresholds. I would package recurring checks into governed reporting so data stewards can see exceptions, investigate causes, and track remediation over time.
