Sample interview questions
I begin by reviewing specifications, prototypes, and existing interfaces with the product manager and engineers. I test representative workflows myself, identify the user tasks and failure cases, then draft task-oriented guidance alongside accurate reference material. I keep the documentation close to the release process so changes are reviewed and updated before launch.
I reproduce documented procedures in a realistic environment, using the CLI, API client, or product UI that the audience will use. I verify inputs, expected outputs, permissions, error responses, and edge cases with subject-matter experts. I also use peer review and feedback from support tickets or users to identify gaps after publication.
I would combine product roadmap needs with evidence of user impact, such as adoption data, search behavior, support volume, onboarding drop-off, and recurring implementation issues. High-impact gaps that block core workflows take priority over low-value updates. I would communicate the rationale and maintain a transparent backlog with product and engineering stakeholders.
I use Git to work in branches, make focused commits, submit pull requests, resolve review comments, and preserve a clear history of documentation changes. I am comfortable handling Markdown-based documentation, merge conflicts, and release-oriented versioning. This workflow allows docs changes to be reviewed and shipped alongside product changes.
I structure content in layers: quick starts and conceptual overviews for new users, task guides for common implementations, and complete reference documentation for experienced developers. Clear examples, prerequisites, expected results, and troubleshooting help users progress independently. I use feedback and usage signals to refine navigation and address points of confusion.

About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Technical Writer to join our growing team. This role will be responsible for creating and maintaining clear, concise, and accurate technical documentation for our products, ensuring our users and developers have the information and resources they need for success.
As a Senior Technical Writer at Kong Global Inc., you will be responsible for:
Developing, writing, and editing high-quality technical documentation, including API docs, developer guides, reference documentation, and release notes, for a variety of audiences.
Collaborating closely with product managers, engineers, and other docs writers to gather information, understand product functionality, and ensure documentation accuracy and completeness.
Conducting thorough research to gather technical information, including interacting with subject matter experts, analyzing product specifications, and testing software.
Testing to validate documentation content and ensure accuracy.
Utilizing Command Line Interface (CLI) tools to test and document software features.
Managing and maintaining existing documentation, including regular updates, revisions, and deprecation of outdated content.
Implementing and improving documentation processes and standards, including document management and version control using Git.
Reviewing docs for technical accuracy and adherence to established guidelines.
Contributing to project planning and project management efforts related to documentation deliverables, ensuring timely and effective execution.
Actively participating in product management discussions to provide insights and ensure documentation alignment with product strategy.
Owning documentation strategy for a specific product area — going beyond writing to understand how docs influence adoption, reduce support burden, and surface unmet use cases, then prioritizing content work accordingly.
Partnering with product and field teams to identify where documentation gaps are blocking user success, and proposing content investments based on user behavior, support tickets, or adoption data rather than just backlog requests.
To be successful in this role, you will possess the following qualifications:
3+ years of experience in technical writing within a software development environment.
Proven expertise in software documentation, including experience with API documentation and developer guides.
Understanding of API testing and experience with relevant tools.
Proficiency with Command Line Interface (CLI).
Experience or an interest in AI.
Solid experience with Git for version control and collaboration.
Demonstrated ability to perform thorough research and synthesize complex technical information.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
Experience with documentation maintenance, document management, and document reviewing processes.
Experience treating a documentation area like a product — setting priorities based on user impact and adoption, not just ticket volume or team requests.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
