Sample interview questions
How do you evaluate a customer arrangement under ASC 606?

I begin by reviewing the enforceable contract terms, identifying the customer and promised goods or services, and determining the transaction price. I then assess distinct performance obligations, allocate consideration based on relative standalone selling prices, and determine whether revenue is recognized over time or at a point in time. I document key judgments, including variable consideration constraints and contract modifications, to support auditability.

Describe how you would handle revenue recognition for a usage-based SaaS arrangement.

I would first determine whether usage represents variable consideration and assess the contract's performance obligations. For usage-based fees tied to a customer's usage of a service, revenue is generally recognized as the usage occurs when the amount is no longer constrained. I would ensure the billing, usage, and revenue systems reconcile, investigate exceptions, and retain evidence supporting the recognized amounts.

What steps do you take to ensure a reliable monthly revenue close?

I use a structured close calendar with clear ownership for journal entries, reconciliations, reporting, and review procedures. I reconcile revenue subledgers to the general ledger, analyze period-over-period fluctuations, validate key assumptions, and investigate material variances before finalizing reporting. I also track recurring issues and convert them into automation or control-improvement opportunities.

How have you improved a revenue accounting process or control?

I start by mapping the current process and identifying manual handoffs, error points, and control gaps. I partner with system owners and operational stakeholders to define a practical future-state workflow, such as automated data validation or standardized contract review criteria. After implementation, I test the control, document the procedure, train users, and monitor results to confirm that the improvement is sustainable.

How would you communicate a complex accounting conclusion to non-finance stakeholders?

I would explain the business impact first, then summarize the relevant accounting principle and the facts that drive the conclusion in clear, nontechnical language. I would provide practical guidance on what information or contract terms are needed to support the intended outcome. For significant matters, I would prepare concise written documentation so stakeholders, auditors, and leadership can understand both the decision and its rationale.
