Sample interview questions
How do you turn a technical pack and approved sample into a production-ready sewing pattern?

I first validate all measurements, construction details, seam allowances, notches, grainlines, and fabric assumptions against the approved sample. I develop the base pattern, check balance and fit, document specifications, grade the required sizes, and issue controlled digital files with clear revision details for manufacturer use.

Describe how fabric characteristics influence your pattern-making decisions.

I account for stretch, recovery, weight, drape, shrinkage, and directional behavior before finalizing ease, seam construction, and pattern dimensions. For example, knit and stretch fabrics usually require different ease and stabilization decisions than woven fabrics, while lace or lightweight materials may need specific seam and support considerations.

How would you investigate a fit issue identified during garment sampling?

I would compare the sample against the measurement specification and fitting feedback, then identify whether the issue originates in the pattern, grading, fabric behavior, sewing execution, or incorrect construction. I would revise the relevant pattern areas, document the reason for the change, and communicate clear correction notes to the manufacturer.

What practices do you use to prevent manufacturers from working from outdated pattern files?

I use consistent file naming, revision numbers, dated change logs, and a centralized folder structure. Each release includes the current pattern, measurement chart, construction notes, and a concise explanation of revisions, and I confirm that the manufacturing partner has received and acknowledged the correct version.

How do you manage several pattern-development projects with overlapping deadlines?

I prioritize work based on production deadlines, sample dependencies, and risk to delivery timelines. I maintain a tracker for each style’s status, revisions, approvals, and open issues, communicate early when information is missing, and reserve time for quality checks before releasing final files.
