Sample interview questions
How do you approach a non-standard enterprise deal that Sales wants to close quickly?

I first clarify the commercial objective, customer requirements, timeline, and proposed deviations from standard policy. I assess pricing, margin, legal, revenue-recognition, and operational risks, then present practical options that preserve deal velocity while securing the necessary approvals and documentation.

Describe how you would resolve disagreement between Sales and Finance on deal terms.

I would make the trade-offs explicit by grounding the discussion in data, policy, customer impact, and the financial implications of each option. My goal would be to identify an alternative structure that meets the customer need while protecting revenue quality and establishing a clear decision owner if escalation is needed.

What metrics would you use to evaluate Deal Desk effectiveness?

I would monitor deal cycle time, approval turnaround against SLAs, non-standard deal volume, discount and margin trends, exception rates, booking accuracy, downstream order issues, and stakeholder satisfaction. I would use these measures to find bottlenecks and prioritize process improvements.

How have you used Salesforce or CPQ tools to improve commercial operations?

I use CRM and CPQ data to standardize quote configurations, approval workflows, pricing guardrails, and reporting. This reduces manual errors, improves visibility into exceptions, and lets Sales move faster on routine deals while Deal Desk focuses on strategic complexity.

How would you manage risk in channel or cloud marketplace transactions?

I would confirm the commercial flow, involved parties, marketplace terms, pricing and discount treatment, revenue-recognition requirements, and fulfillment responsibilities early. I would coordinate with Legal, Finance, and Order Management to document approvals and ensure the transaction can be executed cleanly after signature.

  • Influence cross-functional decisions: Serve as a trusted advisor to Sales, Finance, Legal, Revenue Accounting, and Order Management, balancing commercial objectives with financial and operational considerations to move deals forward.

  • Support complex commercial models: Navigate channel and partner transactions, cloud marketplace deals, and non-standard agreements while identifying potential risks and ensuring smooth downstream execution.

  • Improve and scale deal operations: Identify opportunities to streamline the quote-to-order process, leverage AI and automation, establish best practices, and enable Sales to operate more efficiently as the business grows.

  • You build trust with Sales by being a valued partner—creative, collaborative, and solution-oriented—while still holding the line when it matters

  • You’re energized by cross-functional collaboration and know how to drive alignment across strong personalities and competing priorities

  • You have a sharp eye for risk and detail, but don’t lose sight of the bigger picture

  • You’re a clear, thoughtful communicator with strong critical thinking skills and a constant drive to improve systems, processes, and how teams work together

At a minimum, you need to have:

  • 5+ years of experience in Deal Desk, Sales Operations, or a similar deal strategy role in a SaaS or subscription-based business

  • Strong understanding of deal structuring, pricing strategies, and contract negotiations

  • Experience partnering with Legal and Finance on non-standard terms and approvals

  • Proficiency with Salesforce (CPQ experience strongly preferred) and comfort working with data and complex deal scenarios

  • Familiarity with channel selling model and transacting through cloud marketplaces
