Sample interview questions
How would you use network telemetry to reduce mean time to respond for a SOC team?

I would first map the SOC's alert triage and investigation workflow, identify data gaps and repetitive tasks, then create dashboards, detections, and automations that enrich alerts with relevant network context. I would measure improvements through metrics such as time to validate, time to contain, and false-positive reduction.

Describe how you would design an ExtraHop integration with an external security tool using REST APIs.

I would define the required workflow and data contract, authenticate securely, validate the API limits and error-handling requirements, and implement an idempotent integration with structured logging. I would test it against representative events, document ownership and operational procedures, and monitor its health after deployment.

What networking concepts are most important when investigating suspicious east-west traffic?

I would examine Layer 2 through Layer 4 behavior, including VLAN or segment context, IP and port relationships, TCP session patterns, DNS activity, protocol anomalies, and encrypted versus unencrypted traffic. I would correlate those observations with expected application behavior and asset criticality to identify lateral movement or command-and-control indicators.

How would you approach a customer that has different technical and communication norms from your own team?

I would begin by understanding their stakeholders, escalation model, decision-making process, and preferred level of technical detail. I would adapt my communication style, establish shared success metrics, provide transparent status updates, and confirm decisions and next steps in writing.

Give an example of an automation opportunity for a resident security architect.

A valuable automation would enrich high-priority detections by retrieving asset context, related network records, protocol metadata, and relevant threat indicators, then opening or updating a case in the customer's ticketing platform. This reduces manual enrichment work and gives analysts consistent, actionable evidence at the start of an investigation.
