Sample interview questions
How would you investigate an emerging fraud pattern across messaging and voice traffic?

I would first define the suspected indicators and establish a baseline for normal traffic by channel, customer segment, geography, and time. I would use SQL and visualization to identify anomalous clusters, validate hypotheses with event-level evidence, assess customer and network impact, and document indicators that can be operationalized in detection rules or models.

Describe how you would reduce false positives in a fraud detection model.

I would review false-positive cases with domain experts, identify the features or thresholds driving incorrect outcomes, and segment performance by traffic type and customer cohort. I would then refine labels and features, test changes against holdout data, measure precision-recall tradeoffs, and deploy gradually with monitoring and a feedback loop.

What information should be included in a root-cause analysis after a major fraud incident?

A strong root-cause analysis should document the timeline, attack path, affected systems or customers, indicators of compromise, control gaps, detection gaps, quantified impact, containment actions, and preventive recommendations. It should clearly assign owners and deadlines for remediation while presenting risk in language that technical and executive audiences can act on.

How do you prioritize fraud mitigation work when several threats are active at once?

I prioritize based on likely customer harm, financial and reputational impact, attack scale and velocity, exploitability, confidence in the evidence, and time to mitigate. I would immediately contain high-severity active abuse, while maintaining a structured backlog for strategic model improvements and longer-term control design.

How would you collaborate with data scientists and engineers on a new detection capability?

I would translate investigative findings into clear behavioral hypotheses, labels, candidate features, and success metrics. With data scientists, I would validate model performance and explainability; with engineers, I would define implementation requirements, alerting, rollout safeguards, and monitoring so the capability is reliable in production.
