Sample interview questions
I begin by confirming the customer profile, ownership and control structure, source of funds and source of wealth, business purpose, and geographic exposure. I then compare expected activity with observed transactions, document risk indicators and mitigating factors, and escalate or recommend restrictions when the residual risk is outside policy tolerance.
I compare transaction volumes, counterparties, jurisdictions, payment patterns, and use of products against the customer's stated business model and expected activity. Material inconsistencies are investigated through supporting evidence, open-source research, and customer outreach where appropriate, with the rationale recorded clearly.
Key risks include use of obfuscation methods, exposure to sanctioned jurisdictions or entities, high-risk counterparties, mule activity, fraud proceeds, and weakly verified ownership structures. Effective controls combine risk-based onboarding, blockchain and transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, escalation governance, and ongoing review.
I monitor FATF publications, local regulatory updates, enforcement actions, internal policy changes, and industry guidance. I assess the operational impact, update review approaches or documentation as needed, and share practical guidance with relevant teams.
I would validate the ownership chain using reliable corporate records and independent sources, identify ultimate beneficial owners and control persons, and assess any PEP, sanctions, or adverse-media exposure. I would document unresolved gaps, request proportionate evidence, determine the risk rating, and provide a clear, policy-based recommendation to the relevant decision-maker.
