Sample interview questions
What sign languages do you interpret, and what qualifications or registrations do you hold?

I am fluent in my designated sign language(s) and hold the relevant professional qualification or registration required in my market. I maintain my credentials through ongoing professional development and follow applicable national interpreting standards.

How do you prepare for an assignment involving unfamiliar technical or medical terminology?

I request agendas, presentation materials, speaker information, and glossaries as early as possible. I research key terminology, identify concepts that may need careful rendering, and clarify any access or communication preferences with the organizer when appropriate.

How do you maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries during sensitive meetings?

I follow the interpreter code of ethics, keep all information confidential, and interpret faithfully without adding personal opinions or advice. I also clearly maintain my role as an impartial communication professional.

Describe how you handle a fast-paced conference session or panel discussion.

I prepare thoroughly in advance, monitor speaker changes and timing, and use established interpreting techniques to preserve meaning and intent. If an issue affects interpretation quality, I communicate it professionally through the appropriate channel and seek a practical solution.

How do you ensure an accessible experience in remote interpreting sessions?

Before the session, I test video, audio, lighting, connectivity, camera framing, and platform accessibility. During the meeting, I monitor turn-taking and visibility, and I promptly raise technical issues that could prevent the Deaf participant from fully accessing the conversation.
