Financial Reporting IFRS Audit Internal Controls Team Management Banking Regulatory Compliance Process Improvement Cross-functional Collaboration Financial Analysis

I am writing to express my interest in the Financial Reporting Manager position at Monzo. With a strong background as a qualified chartered accountant and over four years of post-qualification experience in audit and financial reporting, I am confident in my ability to deliver high-quality EU financial reporting and support Monzo's expansion.

In my previous role at a Big Four firm, I managed audits for retail banks and led teams in implementing IFRS standards, which aligns perfectly with the responsibilities outlined. I am particularly drawn to Monzo's mission to make money work for everyone and its innovative approach to banking.

I thrive in fast-paced environments and have a proven track record of driving process improvements and mentoring junior staff. My technical expertise, combined with a collaborative mindset, makes me an ideal candidate to contribute to Monzo's finance function.

I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how my skills can support Monzo's growth and financial governance.

Can you describe your experience with IFRS implementation and how you ensured compliance in your previous roles?
In my previous role as a manager at a Big Four firm, I led IFRS 9 and IFRS 16 implementations for several retail banks. I coordinated with cross-functional teams to assess impact, updated accounting policies, and trained staff. I also prepared disclosure checklists and worked closely with auditors to ensure compliance.
How do you approach mentoring junior team members while managing tight reporting deadlines?
I prioritize clear communication and set realistic milestones. I hold weekly check-ins to review progress and provide guidance, while also encouraging junior members to take ownership of tasks. During peak periods, I adjust workloads and offer hands-on support to ensure deadlines are met without compromising quality.
Describe a time you improved a financial reporting process. What was the outcome?
At my previous job, I automated the monthly reconciliation process using Excel VBA and Power Query, reducing manual effort by 40%. This improved accuracy and freed up time for analysis. The new process was adopted across the team and praised by senior management.
How do you ensure strong internal controls over financial reporting?
I establish a robust control environment by documenting key processes, identifying risks, and implementing mitigating controls. I regularly test controls and involve internal audit for independent reviews. I also promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
What strategies do you use to collaborate with cross-functional teams like FP&A and tax?
I schedule regular alignment meetings and use shared project management tools to track dependencies. I ensure clear communication of reporting requirements and timelines. By understanding their needs, I can provide timely data and insights, fostering a collaborative environment.

  • Collaborating with the MBEU team based in the EU, FP&A, regulatory, tax, treasury, and other cross-functional teams to gather data and align reporting.
  • Working with our engineers and data teams to automate the production elements of this role, allowing you to focus on the parts of the role where your knowledge and skills provide the most value.
  • Supporting the CFO and EU Financial Controller with leadership team board compliance obligations and related ad hoc activities
  • Supporting our finance control team to ensure a swift month-end close process, particularly those around complex areas such as share options, provisions and financial instruments.
  • Driving continuous improvement in reporting, reconciliations, and controls using modern finance tools and methodologies.
