Sample interview questions
Can you describe your experience with DoD contract types, specifically Cost Plus and Fixed Price, and how you manage financial execution for each?

I have managed both Cost Plus and Firm Fixed Price contracts. For Cost Plus, I focus on tracking allowable costs and ensuring accurate billing. For FFP, I emphasize adherence to budget baselines and monitoring against spending plans. I prepare detailed variance analysis to ensure financial objectives are met.

How would you handle a situation where a program is over budget?

First, I would analyze the root cause, whether it's underestimation, scope changes, or inefficiencies. Then I would present findings to the PMO and recommend corrective actions, such as re-forecasting, reducing discretionary spending, or adjusting the spending plan while ensuring compliance.

Given the TS/SCI clearance requirement, how do you ensure data security when working with financial data?

I strictly follow all security protocols and handle sensitive information on approved systems only. I avoid using unsecured networks and ensure any deliverables are processed in compliance with DoD security guidelines. I also stay updated on security training.

What is your approach to developing a pricing proposal for a new federal contract?

I start by gathering detailed cost inputs from technical and operational teams, then build a cost model that includes direct and indirect costs. I validate rates with corporate finance and ensure the proposal aligns with regulatory requirements and competitive benchmarks before final submission.

Can you provide an example of how you improved financial reporting accuracy or efficiency in a previous role?

In a previous role, I automated a monthly reporting process using Excel macros that saved time and reduced errors. By streamlining data consolidation from multiple sources, I improved accuracy and allowed the team to analyze trends more quickly, which was well received by management.
